First Look: 2005 Cadillac STS V6
"General Motors wants to put Cadillac on a par with Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz in terms of performance, comfort, agility, refinement and craftsmanship. The results are quite impressive with the STS. It replaces the Seville and is close to the BMW's character in ride control, steering response and powertrain.
The STS we bought to test has a 255HP V6 and a $49,590 list price. A more expensive and powerful 320HP V8 model can be ordered with all-wheel-drive, pushing the price to $60,000.
So far, our testers have been impressed with the car's performance and driving characteristics. The V6 is smooth and strong, and the automatic transmission is one of the slickest and most responsive we've experienced.
Handling is quite agile and the ride taut yet supple. The firm and supportive seats are a major improvement over earlier Cadillac accommodations.
The rear seat isn't very roomy, however. The interior is elegant but understated; some low-grade hard plastic trim represents a slight off-note.
Fit and finish is very good.
Unlike radios in competing sedans from Audi and BMW which have a single multifunction knob you must fuss with whenever you want to change the station, the Cadillac's radio is easy to tune.
We will see how the new STS stacks up against its competitors in a future test.
It's possible that Cadillac's new international flair will put the STS among some of the world's best sedans."
