Hello,

I am a new owner of a 2001 Deville DTS (for about 5-6 mos now). It has 53,000 mile on it, perfect condition and I have the GM extended warranty to cover any major issues. So far I have only had to replace the crank sensor and I just put 4 new tires on it. I take the train to work and really only drive it regularly to my gym and back (about 3-5 miles) daily, and to Maine about every other weekend or so (150 miles one way).

I was just curious about a burning smell after a hard acceleration and any reccomendations to keep the engine "healthy". Could this an oil smell? I have followed the advice on this site about 'exercising' the engine to burn off teh carbon buildup-- would this be the smell?

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

I get an odd smell after I've hammered on mine, too. Mine's got about 48k miles on it I think (long story). I'm pretty sure I have a very slow coolant leak. I also think it's blowing a bit of oil out the fill cap/breather under heavy acceleration. That 'valve cover' (coil pack) has a light film of oil on it. The coolant level hasn't dropped and oil consumption is 'normal', but the smell is a cross between oil and coolant.

You wouldn't smell the carbon - it's shooting out the tail pipes.

So should I worry about the smell? I figured it was oil, but wasn't sure. Shoudl I have anything in particular checked?

It's probably a leak, which isn't usually a big deal unless it's leaving puddles of oil in the driveway or causing smoke to billow from under the hood. I haven't tried to look for mine because it's not really a big deal to me. It's not dripping on the driveway or smoking. If the smell bothers you you can have it looked at. I just switch the HVAC to "recirc" when I smell it so it doesn't draw the smell in from under the hood.
