My '98 has only 52k miles. The A/C has just began to act up. While I'm on the road at higher speeds, it blows cool and acts normal. However, when I have to slow for traffic, etc., the A/C air quits cooling. I had a local guy check the freon and he said he added 1/2 lb but it's still doing the same.
The dealer is saying I need to replace the compressor. They said "the pistons are breaking up"? Could this be true??
Someone please respond.
Thanks..........Bud

check and make sure the fans are coming on at idle. Almost sounds like on the highway the air is cooling the condenser. Start it up in the morning and turn on the air after it has been sitting overnight. The fans should come on after about 10 seconds, if not imeadiately.

Also try cleaning the bugs and dirt out of the condensor behind the grill. Depending on where you drive it could be really loaded and blocking air flow. Compressed air and then a garden hose to flush it works well.

Have some oil added to the compressor.
