: 170 degree stat??

I read somewhere that someone was using a 170 degree thermostat and was trying to find it again. Does anyone know who sells it or where I can order it from?
I think it is the perfect compromise between the 160 and the 180. The 180 she still runs a little hot and the 160 in my opinion is to cold.
Thanks for any help..

Roger Vinci in Orlando also sells them. Very expensive and they include the water neck. Around $80. If you live in a cooler climate you will want to "plug" the by pass hole or restrict it. It is not unusual in cold weather to run around 150*. I think it is a 160* that he modified. In the heat, on the road and idle it runs between 170 and 185.

If you look over on the z06 forums you'll note that most results with the LS6 and lower temp'ed t-stats will reduce HP (they have dyno sheets to back this up) on a STOCK (or even lightly modded) car. It's only when into the heavy mods that they have found benefit in lowering the stat.

Just $0.02

Let me be ignorant for a second (there's a big surprise) but isn't the ECM programmed to maximize performance when the engine has reached operating temperature? Ergo, isn't the stock operating temperature 190 (give or take whatever tolerances are programmed in)? So wouldn't you need a custom tune to get a performance gain if you went with a colder 'stat?

Though I suppose the CAGS feature would be disabled by a colder 'stat, which is a plus.

610 - that's been my quaestion. Does anything happen to compensate for 170 thermostat?

I think with anything lower than a 180 degree stat you need programming. I am getting it tuned very soon and I hate how hot she runs. At the track tonight when I made my pass the digital read out said 204 degrees, too damn hot. I would like it down around 180ish. I would think when you get it programmed that you could have the fans come on earlier and then shut off earlier than what ever they are programmed for now. That way you could take full advantage of the lower temp stat.

Just a thought, I will do some more reading though thanks for your opinions..

I have put a 160 deg stat in mine, but it won't do a bit of good until Phil at DynoTech reflashes my pcm in June. Yes, the fans have to be reprogrammed to come on at a lower temp, or it's a waste of money.

I had a brand new 160 deg stat in the garage for my 99 SS Camaro that I never installed. I tried to use it in the V, but it wouldn't fit. Stealth told me he thought the unit for the new GTO from SLP would fit, and he was right.

Just remember that an (automotive) ICE is a heat pump, most prefer to run as close to meltdown as possible, while still remaining safe (and warrantable), to make the most power.

Not rocket science, ok maybe it is ;)

You will have to use a stat from a 04 Z06, or any LS2 as the V has the updated, cheaper stat. I got mine from SLP for 19.95 usd.

Got mine from lingenfelter. Fit fine.
Injected motors run faster when cooler. I always got my fastest runs in after getting close to ambient. A hot motor is always slower by my experiance. Top fuel..now that is another story.

:Offtopic: cts-v ls6, I tried to send you a PM but your friggin' mail box is full.
How much you want for your OEM CTS-V exhaust?:hmm:

I have a '98 Catera, you may know it by more demeaning terms, but so far I'm making it my project to work with it! I'm also looking to go for a lower temp themostat! I think back pressure on the 195degF thermostat was what blew my Heater Control Valve and the Waterpump seal!!

For those of you who have put a lower temp thermostat : What's the cost of reprograming the ECM to have the fans open sooner? And, what's the performance cost? I'm assuming even with this change the car passes.. say.., California's inspection? If it passes California's it'll pas NewYork's!!!!!

Tony Abhrams is an engineer who designed the Tony Ram-Air for the CTS. Long ago he suggested to me a lower thermostat for my 3.6. Unfortunately no one makes one. My understanding and I may be wrong is the ECM reprograms itself. And doing any self adjustments are near impossible. Try it and see what happens.

Well..., your words are very comforting!!

If I drilled a couple of holes on the 195degF stat, Do you think that would help at least with back pressure?

I'll keep looking for a suitable 180 stat & housing!
