Hi. I'm new to the forum.... and to the Catera.

I recently picked up a 97 that needs a new engine. The previous owner blew a head gasket, and then tore the engine down, leaving it in a total state of dis-repair. Now I'm trying to put the project back together again. I am thinking that putting a used block and heads into the car with the original accessories is the way to go. I'm wondering if a later model engine will work? Does anyone know if there are any real problems with this swap.

As far as I know, they all use the same 3.0L engine. I would say if you were going to get a new engine or parts, get it from a 2000 or 2001, they had fewer problems (I'm not sure engine-wise, but overall fewer problems).

99 engine was the first year for upgraded things like Electronic throttle , coil on plug igniton, different torque converter, - and a lot of others.

Keep it 97 or 98 . 99-01 changed from the first two years.

All years use the coil-on plug ignition. The basic items like the head for example are the same. It makes no difference what extras it had (torque converter or electronic throttle)
