: Plasti-Dip the V

Learned quite a bit going thru the process. If I had one more gallon of dip the roof and hood would look much much better, but not bad for a weekend project. This was 2 gallons of gunmetal and 2 gallons of anthracite. Has some stripping on the roof and hood but meh it is what it is at this point.

What I started out with cleaning the damn thing after being on the road for about 3 weeks

Power washed the car

Then hand washed with Dawn,

Then Hand washed with Dip-Wash

Wiped down with Pre-Dip Spray

and started taping

I removed the rear panel tail lights mirros and belt line moldings rather than taping these things. Extra 15 minutes in work I think paid off for the finish

First Coat

Then I had an uh-oh between the first and second.

Three coats of Gunmetal

Gun metal base

After using up all the gun metal ended up with around 3 coats of anthracite putting them on very thick to hide the imperfections, I was getting about 5-6 coats with gunmetal with how light I was putting them on

Third coat of Anthracite

Should have thinned that uh-oh .. Oh well lol

Finished, all aside from the lower grill I need to re-spray black

I've yet to see a dipped car in person, curious as to the texture of the paint finish. Your color combination came out really nice. Looks a lot like a color Prodrive offered called British Black

Looks great. Mine is currently plastidipped also, but I did mine gunmetal with black roof. Your color looks better than the gunmetal I have, looks darker. I'm redoing it black with black glossifier on the roof/hood/trunk following the body line with bronze rims. That's the glory of plastidip, you can change color every week if you wanted too!

Post up some pictures of yours if you could. My roof is subpar, my own inexperience there not the product. So I am thinking about ordering a gallon of black or a sheet of vinyl

I think they both looked fantastic! I love the color and would do that first color mix I think! Makes me wish I had more time than I do and more cash laying around! Am jealous for sure though!

I have to admit, I thought it would look bad but thinks the opposite after seeing your pics. That looks great. How do you apply it? I'd like to look into this a bit. Thanks.

Peter look into YouTube dip my car. Tons of videos. Also they have a lot of new products coming out that look great.

I really wouldn't mind plasti dipping one but I sure don't have the time to do so or could decide on a color. Would want something different but not too wild!

That looks pimp. How much all the supplies run you?

Hey man it looks great! I was actually excited to do this myself but then ran into some forums that highlighted owner's negative experiences. Have you had anything negative happen with your dip? Other owners have seen things like peeling, 'baking' of the dip to the car itself, etc...

There is actually a local company in town that quoted me about $400 to do the car itself, and another $100 for the rims.

I believe there is a 12 month warranty.

My concern is long term...also if you want to sell the car....how hard is it to remove the plastidip?

Appreciate your thoughts/insight!!

I repainted my car; and peeled off the gunmetal, came off flawlessly! As long as you put atleast 5-6 coats, it should be thick enough to peel off with ease! One solid piece per body panel. Here is my new paint scheme, flat black with the roof/trunk/hood on the body line with the plastidip glossifier. Just need to paint the rims with their bronze/copper color. Oh and also going to be trying blue plastidip on the calipers (see if it holds up to the heat) sorry for the bad garage pics, my lighting sucks in there.

My car is already peeled. Came right off in about two hours getting spots with over spray.

As I mentioned the car wasn't perfect as and it was eating away at me seeing the stripes and sone texture. Folowed up with DYC and they were very helpful giving me some pointers for next time.

There's a glossifer and pearl top coat to use. You do not spray normal clear coats on the product

It looks good, but I still don't know why everyone continues to follow the blacked out rim trend. It looks like crap. Grey or chrome rims would make this vehicle look so much better.

Everyone has their own taste in rim color. I personally hate chrome rims (only classic cars should have chrome imo). As far as grey rims, well they'll just look like every other car rims, stock ans boring. The black or any other color rim, gives a car a more custom/ race look.

I've always wondered, how easily does this paint scratch? With the flat look I've always assumed it would be easy to scratch and stand out.

Koi Orange with flat black roof

As a huge Oklahoma State University fan, these colors give me the biggest hard-on. This is easily the best CTS-V I've seen on this website in my opinion. What you did here just moved to the #1 spot on my V's mod to-do-list.

This is the color I was looking to do. How many gallons did you use total? Did you use the spray gun DYC sells? What went wrong? I appreciate your input so I don't make the same mistake. Thanks in advance.

I used the earlex 3500 not the new DYC sprayer they have out.

If you have the earlex you need to watch how much you fill the paint cup up when doing the hood and roof because the vent hole will clog up with dip and dry

I used 4 gallons 2 gun metal 2 anthracite

I next time I need to move faster and spray thicker as I got into doing the 1/4 panels I had some texture because the dip was drying before it hit the car.

Id think all of my issues would be solved with the new DYC sprayer I hope
