: Is it safe to buy a Northstar now? I can't stop driving Cadillacs!

I've been driving '95 Devilles since my short-lived ownership of a '99 N* turned out badly.

I'm thinking I will be ready to upgrade in a year or less. From my research, the head bolt issue appears to have been resolved in 2005 and newer models.

Can any Caddy techs confirm that? I'm thinking I will look for an '06-08 DTS with under 85k miles. I would appreciate any advice on potential problems I should looks for when purchasing?

You should be fine. GM lengthened the head bolts in 2000 and the HG failures dropped way down. In '04 they went to a coarser thread pitch and the failures all but disappeared. I am confident enough that I just picked up a nice clean well equipped '04 SLS for my daughter with 134K on it.

Ranger not to offend you but the problem is far from solved even the 04 and up with the coarser thread we are getting stud kit orders for as new as 07 and 08.

Even an 03 CTS blew HG's:

I (http://www.carrollcustomcadillac.com/Pages/03CTS.aspx) have to recover the pics but it was a low mileage car

No offense taken. If I'm wrong, by all means correct me. I think this is the first time I've heard that. Let's just say they are fairly rare (or at least no longer common).

Any engine equipped with head gaskets is able to blow head gaskets.

The 04 and 05 I have seen. The treads looked good but the headgaskets failed. I believe from lack of coolant maintenance.

i Agree to that the coarser thread has had alot less failures but then again there not as old, i do believe it did help with the failure rate but it still isnt cured.
