I am the great-grandson of the original owner. My aunt Bernice decided some 15 years ago that at age 90, she shouldn't be driving. It was the nicest car I ever had, and I've added 40,000 miles to the odometer since she gave it to me. Total mileage is now 66,000. It won't pass smog in California, so I'm thinking of giving it up. Any suggestions?
I'd be surprised if it's anything major with only 66k on it.
Check the EGR system. I'm not sure how to do this though. :)
Also, I think O2 sensor(s) need replacing after about 60k. These play a part in regulating fuel mixture, which might play a part in bad emmisions.
Anyhow, it's worth it for a 80 deville to at least find out why it wont pass. Can't give up a classic so easy. ;)
Could be as simple as engine not reaching proper temperature. Running too cool will raise emissions. Replace thermostat with a 195 degree one.
what did it fail on most importantly.
HC is running rich,CO raises with HC and NOx is high combustion chamber tempertures. which egr or cataylic converters is resonsible for.
