: The Cadillac Ducks

Does anybody know where the ducks on the Cadillac emblem came from? Is there any significance to there being 6 of them? Also, have they now been dropped from the emblem? If so, anybody know why?

Thanks,

Mark

It was part of the Cadillac family crest. they were dropped in 2000 in favor of the more streamlined emblem that I don't really care for.

I miss the duckies! :crying:

The incorporation of "the ducks"
commenced in 1905. The birds are
merlettes, which are the heraldic
adaptions of the martin. The birds are
set in trios to represent the holy trinity.
Merlettes were apparently awarded to
knights in the crusades.
Do a search herein. There has been a
recent discussion on the history of
'the emblem' including some great
references to sites. The story is sad.
The noble birds were cast out in
a scheme in 1999-2000. By 2002
the President and all the Escalades
already had what every Caddy now possessed,
a 'cheapcraptastic" version of the original emblem.
The violators of tradition did this deed, and in
doing such (with the head office somehow
legitimizing the new more marketable "abstract"
version of the emblem), made a change in the noble
emblem, which excluded the Crown and the Birds.
This offends the 'Esteemed Caddycommunity' right
back to 1905 and before with Monsieur Cadillac
himself, the founder of Detroit.

'Monsieur Cadillac' himself pieced together the emblem from many different sources. It isn't a recognized crest before he came to America. It has also changed so many times, that there is no one 'true' version. Look up the history of Antoine DeLamothe-Cadillac if you don't believe me.

That said, I like the current version the best. It is sleek and modern like the new designs.

Off-topic: Do you post from your PDA, Tom? I'm just curious about the odd formatting of your posts...

I like the ducks myself. On the other hand, I like the new logo, it's pretty cool.

Hi GothicaLeigh
You are historically accurate
;but, perceptions of modern time
trends are subjective matters of
taste.
In any event, I duly acknowledge
your keen cognizance of my "odd
formatting". It is not attributable
to a PDA as suggested (although
I admit not knowing what a PDA is);
It is a deliberate style designed to
maximize readability.

Well it annoys the crap out of me. I still hold that the ducks were run over by the Catera.

You can thank the whiny-ass feminists who cried about Cindy Crawford for the disappearing ducks. Some of GM's female employees said the use of Cindy in the Catera superbowl ad was offensive. I say the damn cows were jealous.

Hi Jesdasensation,
(get a Caddy in the driveway already)

There was certainly a feminazi, ugly, fat
GM employee conspiracy and whinefest
going on, which must have caught the
attention of weak kneed, spineless male
executive(s) who pushed to kill the ad., in less
than a month, on the alleged grounds that it was
"sexist" :cookoo: ,notwithstanding the huge costs.
As a consequence of ugly jealous women,
geeky politically correct execs. ;and, the
fact that Cindy was hotter than any Catera
(Opel/Cavalier) :sneaky: will ever be...
my beloved ducks got F....d!!

(It's not that I hate the new "abstract"
design, as much as I loved the traditional
emblem and am glad that I have it on my
2000) :)

I saw something strange today while at the Ford dealership looking at new Mustangs. Someone had traded in a beautiful, minty white diamond 2001 DTS and low and behold on the grille it had the OLD emblem!? Complete with cute, fuzzy little duckies. First off, I didn't think they made them THAT big because the crest on the grille is a lot larger than anywhere else, and it's obvious that the previous owner felt the new one sucked. I wish I had my camera and I would scan it here eventually.

To Tom Deville.. were you ever an English professor?? Or write poetry in your spare time??
