Is there a secret way that I can make my car give me the dtc codes ? I had an older seville mid 1990 s and I could press certain buttons and the codes would show up on the display.

Ah, I miss that feature with my Seville and Eldorados. Strange GM put that feature in a vehicle least likely to be used by their owners.

A cheap CAN enabled code reader will do the trick. I bought one to use before getting the CANdi module for my TechII. Still comes in handy for my non-GM vehicles.

Most scanners you buy in the parts stores today are CAN enabled, CAN is the standard that started around 05 for some vehicles, 06 for most of the vehicles. Prior to that GM used the Class II data bus. All the vehicles systems communicate over the data bus between the different accessories and control modules.

Just look for CAN enabled/compatible when shopping for one. I'd be surprised if anything produced in the last few years wasn't CAN enabled.
