The cruise switch went bad, $100+ for a lever with the
various switches (!!!), now -

HOW to get the old one out???

The shaft on the new one that inserts into
that maze of tiny switches looks somewhat like
the old fashioned headlight switch knob that pulls
out after you push in the little release on top of
the switch.

I suppose the airbag and steering wheel has
to come off? If so, besides disconnecting
the battery for at least 20 minutes before
working on it, what else has to be done
to safely remove the airbag?

I took off the little shield around that area,
but don't see any mechanism that might
release that shaft or any other way to
get it out.

Thanks for any tips!!

Its a 5 minute job. Just pull/jerk the turn lever straight out. They pop right out.

As a money saver....next time consider using a more generic GM turn signal stalk. They are about $50-60.

Hey, really appreciate that! Was expecting something more complicated,
like most of the rest of the stuff I've had to fix on that car!

I thought about the generic / used route, but this thing has the
auto rain sensing wipers which takes ONLY this expensive switch.

Thanks much!!

Amazingly so, it worked just as described!

Just to avoid the possibility of pulling the whole
switch assembly that the lever fits into apart,
I kept one finger on that while pulling on the lever.
I had to exert a pretty good amount of pull, but it
did pop out. Looking at the groove near the end
of the shaft, it is tapered on the side toward the
end, apparently to allow it to be pulled out of
some type of spring loaded retainer.

To reinsert, the male key on the very end of the
shaft has to be inserted into the keyway inside
of the socket, then the first plastic part of the
assembly also has to male keys that have to mate
with the female keyways in the outer part of the
socket. Just took a moderate amount of force
to click into place.

The cover slides off toward the front of the car
and reinstalls from forward to rear.

MUST be the simplest thing on that car to
fix! As well as being one of the FEW simple
repairs on the whole car! Just would be nice
if a little shaft, a couple pieces of plastic, and
a couple small electrical switches made in
Mexico for probly between $5 and $10 wouldn't
cost over $100!
