: 2008 CTS throwing multiple codes, dealer can't find problem

Just bought this car, all was fine for 3 weeks took it to dealer to have a trim piece put in place correctly and now I'm having crazy issues with the car! I only drove it 3 mikes from dealer and the check engine light came on, service stability came on, ABS light, break light and it has been back 3 times and they can't figure out what is causing this issue. They requested a manager drive my car back and forth to his home for a few days (I prefer not to do this) once on my way back from traveling the car shut itself down.. I've had tons of codes show up but the cadillac dealer can't seem to figure it out! While out of town it went crazy again and another cadillac dealer said they had no clue... If anybody has experienced this and have any answers I would appreciate a response...
1st time pulled lights from; traction control, service stabilitrac, check engine code; p0700 then 2nd time pulled p0100, p0113, and c0561. They stated that when inspected they didn't hook up the mass air flow sensor.. 3rd time while at an out of town cadillac dealer, they pulled codes p0856, p2544, p0575, u0140, u0121 and u0073. They seriously have no clue what's causing these codes...
Sounds like it's a throttle body issue. I had the exact same lights come on and that was the fix. Replaced the TB and all was OK.

Thank you! He said well maybe if we replace the EBCM it might work.. I asked how much that would cost and it averaged 1,300 - 1,500. I have the power train warranty, but I really don't know much about a
vehicle when it comes to that kind-of stuff. Thank you I will suggest this to the dealership in the morning.
The throttle body is about a $400 repair (just FYI), mine was replaced under warranty, so I don't know the 'real' price.
Make sure you let us know the outcome.

It actually sounds like the ECM to me. Computers can do crazy things. If nothing else, tell them to put the trim piece back the way it was maybe the problem will go away.:rant2:

Check to see if there are any ground wires in the vacinity of the trim piece they played with. A loose or poor ground can cause problems like you're describing.

Thank you, I just called the cadillac dealer and told them to check the piece.. He stated there is an airbag in that location (the trim piece which runs vertical with the windshield) I'm not sure if he believes this could cause the issue but stated he would have the technician check. He said they plugged in the tech 2 scanner and all lights went off. On my way to the dealer this morning the car seemed like it didn't want to go anywhere. It died on me once and I was finally able to get it started again, of course with a dashboard of warning lights... It only has 60,000 miles on it, I wouldn't think it could have any serious issues. Was there a warning light that said reduced power? Maybe even a bell sounding?

There was not a warning light of reduced power, there was a bell sounding noise (loud noise) and I heard a ticking noise coming from the shift location as well (first time I had heard that)

The update today is... Still can't locate the problem (this is at a cadillac dealer) they state they won't give
Up... 10 hours of diagnosing yet can't locate why.. He stated the same thing happened twice to them while test driving however scanning the system comes up with zero problems... They are clueless at this point.. I'm just frustrated!
Are they providing you with a loner? If so, let them have your car until they correctly diagnose it and repair it.
I know it's very frustrating! Don't give up!

They offered, I have not taken them up on it yet because I do have another vehicle. I did tell them to keep it until the issue is found and fixed because I do not want to get stranded anywhere.

Ask them to confirm the ECM is functioning as it should.

I went in today to talk with him per his request. He told me it is not the ECM but he "thinks" it "may" be the ECBM. He stated that every time it acts up and all the lights come on they try to test it and every time they hook it up it clears the codes and then it reads that there is nothing wrong. He explained it may take another 4 - 6 hours of diagnosing at $100.00 per hour that my warrant company said is not covered under my power train warranty. I'm prob looking at $600 - $1000 just for diagnosing it sounds like at this point. I just bought this car July 7th and it seems I may havemade the biggest mistake of my life... trading in a perfect running car for a car that has this many issues. I asked him if I need to find a specialist that deals with computers and wiring and he stated that his guy has 20+ years experience and he is a specialist in this area... I wouldn't think it could be this "hard" to locate an issue.... I'm at a loss...
I had a thought last night (I do my best thinking while asleep). Is your car still covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty? Your dealer will be able to tell you. IF you are still covered, I would find it hard to believe your car is meeting Fed emissions standards while this is happening. Does your state have emissions check stations?
I'm quite surprised that no one from Cad Customer Service has chimed in here! Where are you Laura?

Thank you for you input!! I've never heard of a Federal Emissions Warranty before. I will call the dealer
and ask them if this is possibly covered, thanks a million! I was getting ready to go pick the car up and
take it elsewhere because at this point I'm not having a whole lot of faith in this dealership... It was fine for the first 3 weeks of purchasing it but I HAD to have that window trim piece properly installed (tab was not connected properly) then not 5 miles (after they popped it into place) all dashboard went crazy!! I had driven this car to southern Indiana (from Fishers, just north of Indianapolis) it drove fine no issues... I'm thinking they oops did something and now can't find the issue... I don't know... Thank you again, I will def find out if it is or not.

I asked about the Federal Emissions Warranty, and he said it basically covers the cadilatic converter is all... He says they think they found the problem... I really don't know because I know "zero" about a car repairs... He stated the wiring that runs to the headlamp is running at 800 ohms and should be running nearly
"zero" he said this "could" create all of these issues with the warning lights.. Sounds crazy to me, but they will have that replaced by tomorrow... I guess with this, time shall tell...
The fed emissions warranty covers much more than the cat convertor. It includes the engine controller and a lot of sensors that control your engine. It's too bad the dealer doesn't know.
Hopefully they have correctly spotted and will fix the problem for you.

Thank you! I sure am hoping as well. If for "any" reason this is not the problem, I will be picking it up from Lockhart Cadillac and will be going elsewhere... I have tried researching more about the
wiring that leads to the headlamp, however I really haven't been able to find anything that is even close to this issue. I will keep you posted as you have tried to be very helpful. Thank you again!

Hi I know this is a old post, But I have a 08 CTS with the same problems and they have been working on it for a month with no luck , They have traced wiring and put a ECM and ECBM . Just wondering if this car was ever fixed ? And what was the problem or problems. Any help would be greatly appreciate . Thanks Jeff
The original poster hasn't been active since August 2013, so I don't imagine they're going to come back with an update at this point.

I just want to put it out there , That mine is finally fixed . The problem was the ON Star module was pulling down the serial data line . Was able to unhook the ON Star with out affecting the serial data line. I don't use ON Star so Not a big deal. Have been driving the car with out no problems. I Know that other module could cause the same problem , Hopefully this will help out some else in the future so they don't have to go through what I have. Jeff
