View Full Version : Brake Info ? HEY HEY
how do i figure out if my car is supposed to have which : 11", 12" REAR DRUMS OR 2", 2 3/4" WIDE SHOE OR ABS WITH 2" OR 2 3/4" WIDE REAR SHOE OR WITH NON-ABS WITH 2" OR 2 3/4" WIDE REAR SHOE.
i know i have abs... but 2" or 2 3/4" ?? does it make a difference? im replacing the front rotors:hmm: my 83 has 11" drums and they had fins on the outside, the 12" ones didnt, but but i think it might have something to do with engine size, i have the small option for the engine in my car and i have the smaller set of brakes. i imagine if i had the 6 liter in my car it would have the bigger brakes, so if you have the small engine, my guess would be 11 or the 12's if you have the bigger engine. or take them off and bring them to the store to get sized up. ocjmakaveli 03-07-05, 02:30 PM if your car isn't armored etc. or a limosine then you have the 11x2 rear brake drums
but they dont need that info if your only buying front brakes or do they?
btw you do have abs and make sure the front rotors if you do buy them new have the hub with it they are at least $30 if they try to sell you something cheaper NEW then it's the wrong one. luckily the wrong rotor won't fit anyhow but make sure it's the one with hub autozone for example has the deville fwd rotors listed for the fleetwood too but they don't fit. the shoe size the question was refering to was for the drums, right?... the frnt rotors have nothing to do with shoes... i dont know why they were asking for the shoe sizes then, if im only getting rotors, thats why i was confused... FASSTWOOD 03-07-05, 09:27 PM Your car is 11x2's... R462 is the industry number for the shoes... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7958850497&category=33564&sspagename=WDVW
check those out
Im not too sure id want to buy rotors off of ebay, but if they were actually straight might be worth a try
what u guys think? if your car isn't armored etc. or a limosine then you have the 11x2 rear brake drums.
So what size brakes do the V4P cars have? I can't even stick my finger in from the backing plate side between the rim and the drum. MAYBE 3/8" clearance. Granted, this is where the drum is thicker. Anyone have any pictures of a 11in brake rear from the backing plate side?
I can't imagine any brakes at all being installed on mine. There just isn't room.

well if its a heavy duty fleet then it might also have the 2 3/4 drums the only difference i think is the heavy duty drums are thicker that's it. ocjmakaveli 03-09-05, 02:10 AM juice try these guys they have lower prices and you can choose what kind of rotor slotted or drilled or both etc. and you can get it plated
$80 for the pair with low shipping prices.

What does a non V4P look like? Are V4P (mine is a "non heavy drum" car) and non V4P brakes different?
Thanks!
Tom I Was Thinking Of Buying Slotted Rotors. What Do U Guys Use, Or Recomend? Drilled? Drilled And Slotted? I Was Thinking Just Slotted To Keep More Surface Area. I Heard That Drilled Rotors Sometimes Crack, And Are Really Loud But Never Heard Them Personally, So I Dont Know Brake Sizes (as per 1975/1976 FSM)
11 x 2 = 109.2 sq. in (per 1976 Olds, but I have no idea how they calc)
12 x 2 = 123.0 sq. in (per 1976 Olds, but I have no idea how they calc)
11 x 2.75 = 150 sq. in (Est by my calc)
(So I est the 2.75" brakes are the best)
11in shoe dimensions 12in shoe dimensions
Primary 9" 10"
Secondary 11.5" 13"
Primary thickness 0.25" (75 Pontiac) 0.25" (75 Pontiac)
Sec thickness 0.29" (75 Pontiac) 0.32" (75 Pontiac)
Primary thickness 0.22" (76 Olds) 0.22" (76 Olds)
Sec thickness 0.26" (76 Olds) 0.284" (76 Olds)
In 1975 Pontiac, all 11in rear drum cars has 15/16" wheel cyl, and 12in had 1"
In 1976 Olds, all had 1"
Does anyone have other years to compare? I would like to make a 11in and 12in brake FAQ if others have any additional information I can add.

i would suggest slotted because i've heard that for high speed conditions or hot weather the pads and rotor last longer because they are cooler this also keeps your rotor from warping too soon.
If it works for high speed conditions then it shouldnt be bad for everyday driving. DanTheMan 03-11-05, 11:43 AM This whole post seems to be jumping back and forth between two related topics.:hide: My question though is:
Will the impala rotors be a direct replacement or do I have to search just for the fleetwood ones? i think they are the same
my next question (lol) can i get rotors without the ABS ring? and just loose ABS? or do i actually have to get rotors with the ABS ring for sum specific reason im not aware of? This whole post seems to be jumping back and forth between two related topics.:hide: My question though is:

I am curious now, as I just picked up wheel bearings for my 94, and the seal for the 94 FWB is different than the 94 Impala SS.
Anyone have any ideas on why?
I bought both, the Cadillac one seems better,
