I'm at the auto repair shop. Left HID is out. They changed bulb... Light still doesn't work. The HIGH beam works fine, and the marker light in there works. Just the low (HID) beam (top) light is out. Any thoughts?

HID ballast

👍 I just went out to tell them.

----------

They say they're going to "ohlm" the ballast to make SURE that it's bad, because if they buy it, they own it, if the old one is still good. so, I'm without a car until sometime next week.

HID ballast

Yup, that was what happened to me on my Escalade. Verified it was the ballast by swapping the ballast left to right to verify it wasn't wiring or other electronics related. Luckily I had a spare ballast from a replacement headlight I purchased off ebay due to a cracked housing on the truck when I bought it. It turned out to be a pretty good deal as the used ones on ebay seem to run $150 on average.

They have discovered that a pigtail wire going from the electrical system to the headlight assembly is melted. They say that there is a wire that goes to the high intensity bulb that has current going to it but not current coming out of to service the bulb.

For some reason, no Cadillac dealer in my region has it. They're having one shipped from Cincinnati. They indicated that the ballast for the light assembly on the other side of the car is buried, and would require a lot of labor to dig it out to test on the other side to see if the other ballast is bad.

Depending on the build the ballast is either a round one mounted on the side door or a rectangle one mounted inside the headlamp under the side door.

If the bumper is off to replace the headlamp it's another 5 minutes to remove the other sides ballast.

Whoever has your car shouldn't be working on it.

I was just called by the dealer who told me that this ballast is no longer available. And that the only way to get one is to purchase an entire headlight assembly. I can't believe this! Any ideas as to how I can get a ballast for this? I am livid!

check out ebay.

I bought a used 2005 assembly on ebay and it had one of these ballasts in it:

There also appears to be this style too:

I'm not certain but I think the round ones were only used on CTS/SRX/XLR.

There are two round ones on my sts which had the headlamps replaced in 2010.

I have to move them everytime I change the peanut bulbs.

Well. Got a square one from a friend from this forum, and it has worked well for the past few weeks. Then just about 45 minutes ago.... Here we go again. ...

Well I got a couple of things.
First, when you remove that side door on the headlight housing, it is important that when you put the door back on, the rubber seal is put on properly because from what I read elsewhere on the forum, if its not, it can result in the failure of the ballast, I assume due to moisture.

Next, I happen to have an extra ballast assembly (2nd one pictured above) because I had a headlight assembly replaced and I kept the old one. Let me know if you're interested.

Headlight full of water that's going to happen. That's why they switched to external ballasts. Saves them from swimming.
