: Performance Cooling - operation

Since some time I have noticed a sound from the engine bay but not really been able to locate the problem. Noticed more sound when cold...one day I also found a bolt right under the air filter!
Today, quite a bit from home I realized that the whole cooling fan where wobbling and the whole fan blade where loose. Two of four bolts where remaining. Cracks in the metal part of the fan. Sooner or later the fan will separate completely.
Better safe than sorry, I removed the entire fan....and it will take some time to get a new one, and have to drive the car back before I can get a new fan.
That brings up a question, what does the two electric blowers do? Can I trust them for a while? I wont travel much in city.
Anyone knowing how the two electrical blowers works, and what makes them operate. I guess they only detect coolant temp or do they get input from AirConditioner as well. Never heard them operate.

Depends on which car it is - they're both very different. The Deville goes in ...... Deville.
Generally the cooling fan(s) are controlled by one of two methods - IF some HVAC function requires A/C compressor operation, then fan(s) run continuously in SLOW. If no function is set which requires A/C compressor operation then the fans are controlled by the ECT/PCM data line (Engine Coolant Temperature sensor/Powertrain Control Module). Fans will then go to SLOW at 224 degrees F coolant temperature and to FAST at 236 degrees F.

The mechanical cooling fan is an option. As long as you're not towing a trailer in Death Valley you should be OK with the electric fans. If it overheats you can always stop for a while and let it cool.

Dont know if it will work on the cadillac but it worked on my impala. Unplug the coolant temp sensor and see if the fans turn on. It was a fail safe thing on the obd1 impala.

It's a fail safe on pretty much every car. But what will doing that accomplish?

If he is having problems running too hot and the fans aren't turning on that will get them on. The problem with electric fans is most don't know they are not working until its too late.

It's the big mechanical fan in the STS that broke down, it always spin with (at least) slow speed and probably give enough flow for the HVAC A/C to get cooling.
Anyhow, I took a closer look at it today and the two 80W pusher fans do actually works but very silently with low speed when A/C is on. Stayed in idle for a while and temp gauge where rock-steady. But its easy to feel the air flow coming up from the engine bay when hood is open (from fans). Not as much as with the mechanical fan but even low air speed give much much better cooling than no airflow at all.
So it feels pretty safe...
With reasonable caution, I think you'll be fine. Drive gently, watch the temperature and fix it ASAP.

Coast as much as you can keep the ac off and heat on if possible and avoid stop and go traffic.
Actually, keeping the AC on will keep the electric fans running on low. I recall the latter part of Sub's answer from an older thread with detals on the STS V03 performance cooling option.

Ac on also produces a greater load and thus higher temps. There's a reason why when these cars run hot it cuts the a/c system in an attempt to avoid full blown overheating.
Isn't a feature of Northstar,It lets you run on 4 cyls,
with low coolant, or high temp,until fixed, letting you drive,
so you can get to a repair facility,keeping the temp resonable ? :canttalk::worship::highfive:

There aren't very many cars with the mechanical cooling fan option anyhow. It's designed to do just fine with only the electric fans under normal conditions.
Isn't the OP in Sweden? How hard would the AC really be working? Defog?
