Hi, today I was driving my car and the hood ajar bell rang and light turned on. It quickly shut off so I pulled over, checked the hood and it was closed. This was weird! Does anyone know why this would happen? Also, how do I fix it?
Thank you again!

Hood latch has failed. Need a new one.

Or jump the wires if you aren't in the mood to pay to fix it.

Hello STSJr,

I apologize that your hood ajar notification sounded when you were driving today. I see that you are looking for ways to address it yourself, but if you are interested in taking it to a dealership to have them diagnose it, I would be happy to assist you with that. Please private message me if this is the route you would like to take. Thank you very much for your time.

Fix it yourself OP--fairly easy to install and straight forward.

I had GM dealership look it up and they quoted me 170ish for the part and another 100ish for the labor--I denied of course.

GM-Parts Direct had the hood latch for just shy of 100 bucks shipped and I replaced it within a half hour. Air bag light or any of the other lights have yet to come back on.

STS Serge 172, thank you for the feedback. I enjoy working on my car so I will do it myself.

Thanks again,

If you want the easiest (and cheapest) fix, just remove the hood latch, cut the wires (3) and join the purple and black wire together. Tape them up, replace the hood latch, and your all set.

That's what I would do. Doors or trunk warning I consider valuable, the hood ajar warning I consider more a nuisance. In almost 30 years of driving I can't remember a single time I've ever forgot to close the hood.

My 07 STS hood unlatched at 75mph on the Ohio Turnpike. Car only had a few hundred miles on it. Scared the h---l out of us. Didn't need a warning light for that one. Dealer replaced the defective latch.. Thank goodness for the safety latch. I think I would leave the wires connected! We made it all the way to Cedar Point with no problem. Happened on the way back and I didn't open the hood before leaving so I know it was latched.

It's main reason for existing is to disable the remote starter from allowing the car to start with the hood open.

Hi, I have had the same warning light this summer. I cleaned , agitated the switch and it hasn't come on again. We shall see this summer when it gets hot!
