dts would not start after about an hour of shopping. I used a portable jumper and finally got it started. While driving the headlights where going on and off. There was a loud popping sound coming from the radio and the power was sporatic. The car then died off. I jumped it again and all the system warnings were coming on .Headlights barely working and then shut down. No power. When I try to jumpstart againacts like its going to but then nothing. The lights dont even come on when i open the door. Please help 2007 dts less than 50,000 miles

Sounds like something to take to a reputable auto-electric place if you don't trust your dealer's service dept.

From the description it sounds like the alternator is not charging the battery or the battery is so bad it won't take a charge.
Assuming you have a battery charger at home... try to charge the battery for several hours... then see if it starts.

Next thing I would do is have the charging system and especially the battery, checked out.

Or it just might be a bad battery ground.

Had it towed in and was told the alternator is bad and will cost $1,600 to fix. I want to cry!:crying:

Towed to where ??? Yes, the alternator on these cars is murder to remove/replace, but a reputable automotive electric shop should be able to R&R the alternator and totally rebuild it for less than $500.

Heck - look up your car, year, model, system in www.rockauto.com and find out what they want for an alternator (the voltage regulator is internal - part of the entire unit).

Hawaii is an entirely different planet when it comes to car maintenance costs.

With ~$215 from Amazon, as quoted by Jim, and a labor charge of $440 by our local dealership, the total cost would be ~$660.00. Then again, this cost is in the Mainland ONLY. You should try somewhere else unless you can't get it towed again. The labor cost in Hawaii should be high but not a ripoff like $1,600.00. I hope you can negotiate down after the checking the labor charges somewhere else. I'm glad that I don't live in Hawaii.
