either way with a 70 472 OR 500 you can't go wrong.

alright thanxs guys found a lot of information on the engine.im going to put the 500 in a 66 buick special with a borg warner t 10 and a 8.2 bop rear that has an open 3.23.i know that traction is my biggest problem but what do i need to get it to the low 13s high 12s if faster even better.im already thinking performer intake and 850 holley/demon headers (which are gonna be custom, bbc headers with cad flange)whats the biggest cam i can put without running into problems with the cads non adjustable system? i cant wait to start working on it!!! i was originally gonna go with either a buick 350 or 455 but 500 cubic inches just sounded better!!! i dont know if the buick guys are gonna like it but hey its not a chevy!!!!besides no one will expect a buick special that came with a 225 v6 and column 3 spd to rip em !!!

well i got the engine and by the numbers it seems its neither a 70 or 500.but i got it anyways cause i been looking for one and the engine seems very clean.well the head castings end in 493 which means its a 74 472 with a flat top piston but 120cc heads. im looking for 400hp and 500 ft lbs of torque and i cant afford the bulldog heads.i know the 950 castings will put me at a ridicoulous 13:1 compression ratio which is to much but are ther any other castings that will put me at a more pump gas friendly 9.5:1 - 11:1 compression? or can i get the power i want with these compression?im thinking edelbrock intake, 850 holley????, headers,240 @ 50 cam,and poloishing the chambers finishing it with hei and 2 1/2 exhaust?what do u guys think? i need advice as this is my first cadillac build.thanxs in advance

Did you measure the piston stroke?

not yet im going to take the heads off tomorro to find out for sure what it is.the 493 is a 126cc head right?i read that these engines actually came at 7.8:1 ratio!!!!! well how much can i shave off the head without detonation??can i go as far as .040 to .060 to bring it up to 8.5:1 or higher??any ideas???? i also heard that the 425 heads will bring me to 10:1 compression ratio which is what im looking for, but i reduce flow. can the 425 heads be ported to 472 standards??and is the 425 single plane any good??after reading that it might have so low compression i was thinking of grabinng some 425 heads and 425 single plane.port match both to a 472 intake manifold gasket and polish the chambers and 3 angle valve job to raise the flow????i need ideas !!!anyone has some ???

First, decide exactly what you want out of the engine and how much you're willing to spend to get it there.

I see that you already know what you want to put the engine in and that you want it to run in the high 12's-low 13's. You need to figure what kind of power it'll take to get that car going that fast. There is some kind of formula that'll get you close but I don't know what it is.....you may be able to find some sort of calculator online. You'll need the cars weight to figure it.

To go that fast, an open rear is not going to get it......you need a posi.

Do a google search for cylinder quench or cylinder squish and do some reading. The KB site listed below has some really good info.

If you plan to completely rebuild the engine, there are other, more efficient methods of getting power than to just swap heads.

opened the engine up today and it had a 4 1/4 in. bore and 4 1/4 in. stroke ITS A 500!!!!! that made my day!!! after finding about the low compression i didnt like it and that it might be a 472 worse but now that i know that its a 500 a lot better!!!oh and the heads seem to be rebuild.i checked the valve stem height and it seems pretty even and no shrunken valves so it seems the work is good.almost no ridge either or marks inside the cylinder!!i just need to check the bottom end.but it seems good!! the car weighs aproximately 3300 lbs. getting it to the 13s shouldnt be that much of a problem the biggest problem is getting it faster because of traction.the rearend came with 323s so im just going to install a mini spool.i know many people dont like spools but this is not a driver just show and occasional strip.for now im just going to install the performer intake mild cam and headers(the installation is going to be the hardest thing anyways}ill take it to the strip and go from there.thanxs everybody and lux hauler!!!!
