To my understanding If the car is direct inject (says it on the back of my car and I ran the vin to be sure) it should use heavy duty pads and rotors right? Well once I popped my caliper off I saw that narrower brake pads. Is that normal/possible and should I be concerned at all?

DI does not indicate the heavy duty brake system. For 08-09, you could get a "base" CTS with the only option being the DI motor. If you look in your trunk there should be a sticker for RPO codes, I believe JE5 should be on there to indicate the base brake system. Heavy duty system would read J55.

09 AWD DI does NOT have J55. That was a deleted upgrade from 2008 to 09. I know because I decided to upgrade the rotors and calipers on my 09 DI AWD to J55 ... ;-)
