: New headers, exhaust and muffler1970 Eldorado - pics

Hi all,

Last weekend I had the headers installed from cad500parts along with a new custom (as in not pre-bent) stainless steel exhaust and muffler.

The exhaust I had under the car was only partly replaced in 1999. I had flowmasters installed that sound nice at low rpm, but start to blare and shatter at higher rpm. That just didn't fit the car nor my comfort.
The LH header cracked before and I had it welded in 2008. And now the pipe started to rot just before the muffler so I needed something new. Though I was amazed to see how well the pipes held over time as they were cut up. Really only the attachement to the muffler started to rot. The rest looked very well.

About cad500parts: I called them a few times for info and was assisted by Chris. He had a lot of good info for me. The headers were sent by FedEx and came in very quickly. I thought US Postal service was cheaper, but then the package would go through German customs and you have to pick it up there. Before you can pick it up they will take up to 3 weeks (!!!) before they checked it. Through FedEx wasn't much more expensive, but a LOT quicker and hassle free. The headers were a little scratched up, but that was just the zink coating that could easily be fixed.

About the exhaust shop: I went to EPS (http://www.uitlaten.com) in the north of the Netherlands. I had my exhaust done for my 2006 CTS before and was very happy with them. I couldn't find an exhaust shop in Germany anywhere nearer to Hamburg than this place in the Netherlands. I went to a general workshop (specialized in US cars) in Hamburg that quoted 3-4 days of labor for the exhaust, so that would've been way too expensive.
Anyway, the people from EPS are great. They do the whole thing within a day, so you can just hang around and wait for it. They use pre-bent pipe sections they did on the mandrel, so the diameter is constant. The welding is excelent!
We didn't do the X-joint (proposed by cad500parts) nor H-joint as that was not feasible due to the torsion bar suspension. The dual exhaust joins in the rear muffler anyway.
The headers have a 3" collector. By the way EPS said they receive custom headers from various suppliers in the US all the time and these headers from cad500parts fit exceptionally well. They replaced the flange on the LH header to get more clearance from the steering joint but other than that we only needed to move some hoses.
After the headers the pipes gradually go from 3" to 2.5" and then to 2.25" (like orignial size). The exhaust pipes are the lowest part under the full middle part of the car (between the front and rear wheels), so you wouldn't want to make the pipes too big. Another reason why an X- or H-joint would be too risky as that would be the first to hit and catch a curb or so (and rip and tear everything off).
I didn't check the brand of the muffler, but it is stainless steel and insulated straight through (non-baffled). So the pipe going in on top will leave on top and vice versa.
The whole system results in a decent but still sporty sound. And the car now runs a lot smoother through acceleration, shifting and desceleration.

BTW, I had to be there at 8 am. And since it is a 3 hours ride I had to get up early. That resulted in me forgetting to close the oil cap after I filled up the oil a little. Hence the oil spray... (first time in my life for this to happen to me!)

Great work and excellent headers... A good upgrading of your exhaust system. Most original headers are cracked or have some leak (my RH one have a broken bolt so you can hear the leak when cold).

I had a broken bolt on the most forward bolt of the LH header before. It was cut out from the side and they welded the side shut again and tapped a new thread in the hole. That was just lucky it was the most forward bolt. If it was any more backwards, then drilling it out would be very hard. I know of some 90 degress drills (like pneumatic), but it would still be a tricky job. Hope you can get it fixed some time!

^Yes, you were lucky. My broken bolt is just the closest one to the firewall so if one day I decided to fix it I would have to take that head out :( but as soon as it gets near operating temperature you can hear no noise :D

Make sure next time use anti-seize (like copa-slip) on the bolts :o

It sounds beautiful! :thumbsup: Sound changes considerably from original exhaust system to dual. We can see a smile of happiness on your face in the last seconds of the vid so results must well be worth the money it costs :D

I broke 6 of eight on the passenger side of my 73 eldorado.. 90^ air drill, and MANY shortened drill bits..
most useful tool was a 90^ die grinder with a pointed 3/8 bit.. was able to fire heli-coils in there.. it was tight..
