View Full Version : Blown out mufflers

After 30,000 miles, my mufflers are significantly louder than they used to be, and its fatiguing on long trips.....has anyone replaced theirs with either new stockers or aftermarket for this reason, and if so, which did you purchase? Could the stock cans be opened and baffled somehow? Thx.

Funny but I'd love if my mufflers got louder. It would save me $1200 on buying an aftermarket exhaust for the sole purpose of making the car sound better.

Just take it to the dealer if you're not happy. They'll replace them.

Mine also got louder over the 3 years I had headers. I loved it. You know what, I bet you could even swap for a guy that has a newer car and wants more sound, but for cheap...

Some mufflers depending on thier makeup will get louder over time. I am not sure how our OEM mufflers are contructed so I guess I cannot really answer your question. My KPE mufflers after three years continue to get louder and I love it.

The OEM mufflers getting louder has been noted by many here...

Kooks sells supplemental muffs to help you quiet it down, but most guys, including myself, use these w/ headers. Headers/Corsa (or any aftermkt exhaust) and/or no cats can be pretty loud..

I have 350 miles on my new V (Coupe), this coming weekend, I am replacing the stock system with a Borla. You can HAVE the OEM system if you want to pay for the shipping. Just sayin'

I've seen some posts referring to "insulation " being in the mufflers.... Would this be something like fiberglass that can be replaced? The drone on the freeway at 80 gets old quick....where can I buy kooks supplementals....I don't want to over choke it tho...

Go to the dealer. Warranty.

In a perfect world I would....but how many times am I going to have to listen to them say," oh, that's normal"

Why do the stock units get louder over time?

Why do the stock units get louder over time?

I've attributed it to carbon building up and changing the acoustics in the pipes. It's happened with every performance car I've owned as the change in exhaust note is more pronounced. I didn't notice it in the wife's Passat but I'm sure it did.

I'm not sure I'd call a Passat a performance car :)

Only off a cliff with a tailwind will you get a 12 second quarter out of it. Exactly! Hence my comparison. ;)

I'm not sure I'd call a Passit a performance car :) Fixed that for ya.

What modifications do you have anyway??????? I'm almost at 40K, and haven't noticed a thing.

Fixed that for ya.

So true.
