RE: 1999 STS message CHANGE BRAKE PADS
Can anyone tell me how to reset the CHANGE BRAKE PADS message? I changed the front brakes (definately worn) but the back were fine so I did not change them.
I reset all the codes thanks to the great decription by Rik (IIRC), but that did not help.
I'll be happy to disable the sensor if all else fails.
Any ideas on hot reset, or disable the sensor?
Thanks!

I dont think there is a 'reset' for change break pads... Sure you got the right pads? I know theres sensors built into the pad which tells their low verses the indicator that rubs on the rotor.

I bought Wagner replacement pads - fairly expensive. There is a wire running to the inner pad but the seat on one side was broken during the deinstallation. I placed it back but it is not seated very securely.
I put both 'wires/sensors' in place then I let the car down. When I started the car before moving the car an inch, the message was still displayed, so I am not sure that sensors are able to tell that there are new pads. Or maybe one sensor is damaged.
If there is a work around (like disabeling the sensor or some way to trick the sensor), that would be great.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks for the quick reply!!!!

ACDelco OEM replacement brake pads include new wear sensors in the box.
You "can" disable the 4 wheel sensor loop (and the message) by jumping the chassis connector pins at the affected wheel. Not recommended because you will be defeating the early-early warning and the result could be a carved up rotor at that wheel.
The pads I have on my car did not come with the sensors, and they will not fit them either. I routinly check my pads to make sure they are still good so I'm not worried about wearing them down and grinding up the rotors. I plugged all four sensors from the old pads back in, and tied them down with plastic tie straps. That disabled the message, since it saw that all four were attached. You should be able to just plug them all in, and have th emessage go away. Are you sure that the connection are tight? I would check them, to see if one is loose. Normally, if one or two are loose, it will say "speed limited to 90" instead. At least that's what it did on mine before I plugged in ll four sensors. Good Luck.

This problem has come to the fore with numerous people, more escpecially when fitting non-oem products or uprating the brakes. Bypassing the sensors doesn't really work with obdII, you would also need to know what value resistance to use, so just sticking a paper clip in the sensor connector wont get you there, nor can you just omit the sensor. You need to fool the system into thinking everything is still intact. I had all this when I upgraded my brakes to EBC rotors and pads....The EBC pads don't have a slot for the sensors, so I removed them all.
Only got rid of the errors when the sensors were refitted and tied up out of the way, making the system think everything was normal.
If you've reconnected the sensors, reset the codes and you still have the message, then I reckon it's because you've damaged that sensor during fitting....The only solution is a new sensor or a new pad if it's not seperate.

:yeah: . When I put the EBC rotors and pads on my car, I just reconnected all four sensors and then secured them to the car. After I did that, the message went away. Have you checked to see if maybe one of the sensors has gone bad. If it has, then that might be what is still causing the message to display.
Thanks to all for the guidance. I replaced the sensor ($24 over the counter) and that resolved the problem. It appears that if a sensor is tripped, it can be damaged by contact with the rotor that trips it. My right front was the problem case here. The 3 others were fine.
Peace!
