My wife has a 2004 SRX, AWD, V8. Drove it yesterday and everything was fine. She got in it to leave this morning and the power steering is no longer working.
What are my first areas to check? Fluid level, belt? No DTC codes at the moment that I'm aware of.

Fluid, check for leaks as its a common issue.

No fluid you'd hear a screech. Check belt.
Just checked it out. Belt is in great condition, I couldn't see any cracks or anything in the belt and the fluid looks good too. Was at "hot" level and not darkened at all.
Pump for sure?

Any DIC messages? If there is a problem with the variable assist solenoid the steering will seem very stiff (like no assist) when in reality it just has less assist. Unfortunately it is more likely the rack than the pump.
no codes. I have gotten the steering position sensor off and on a couple of times in the past though. It comes on then goes off after a day or two.
Is there a way to isolate it and determine if its the steering pump or the rack & pinion?

Dealers have a test tool to check pump pressures (>700 psi) that would determine that. I'm wondering if your work on the steering wheel position sensor is involved; can affect system. There is also a code (C type) in the ABS system that will disable the variable effort system.
