i want to use my 1974, 472 engine in a diffrent car...

i have researched a lot about the 472 and 500s but still have some questions

"turbos/blowers"
how much boost can a 8 to 1 caddy engine take with out running forged pistons and rods, also how much lift can the stock heads take, and if you can pin point the weakest performance parts on these engines what would it be? how many rpms can you bring these engines passed before the worst happens? what trannys can i run? does any one have some good dyno numbers or combos they could post..any free Horse power mods etc etc..... anything i should kno before i jump ship and pull the 472 outta the caddy and slap her in the other car?

Thanks

What other car is it going in and what are you planning to modify?

I wouldn't run more than about 10psi on stock pistons and rods and I'd be real sure to keep it rich enough at that level.

The valvetrain is pretty weak, valve float sets in at around 4400 with stock replacement springs IIRC. You can use stronger springs but then you run the risk of breaking the T rocker arm support. The best tranny to use would probably be a 4L80E 4 speed or a TH400, anything less would require some strengthening. Your 74 should be 8.25:1 just to be nit-picky.

Definately a lot of work. I don't know how similar they are but I know one guy has a 80 Z28 with a 472. A similar type of car that would be easier to do would be a Fox mustang, fairmont or even T Bird or a bit heavier G body like a Cutlass or Regal.

They can take plenty of lift... but the higher the lift, the faster the ramp has to be which breaks T pedistals. There's not really a set number..

That would be highly dependant on other factors like the cam, portwork, intercooled or not, everything else that makes power will change it. Sean is making a bit under 800hp on I think 12psi, but he's got bulldog heads and all kinds of other work.
