View Full Version : 120$ for an oil change?!? Damn Stealer!!! JSMeloche 01-27-05, 09:29 AM Yesterday I went to the dealer, i had a couple of thing to get fixed on the Caddy and the oil was due. So i just told the guy "throw a synthetic oil change with that please". Usually I pay 70$CAN at Mr Lube for 7 liter synthetic oil change (Castrol Syntec 5W30).
At the end of the day I go to pick up my car, 120$ for the freakin oil change!!! They charged me 8 liters of oil (too much) at 12.10$CAN per liter!!! I can get the same oil for 7$ at Canadian tire :S. With taxes and service it comes to 120$. They told me they had to purchase the oil from somewhere else since they dont carry it. Asked them if it would be cheaper to use their synthetic oil (Mobil 1) turns out its 15.50$CAN per liter!!!
The rest of the charge where reasonable and the service was really great (120$ to change a thermostat) but that oil change is juste killing me....
Anyway, live and learn!!! caddydaddy 01-27-05, 10:16 AM Wow! I pay around $4 for a filter and $4.60 per quart for Mobil 1 and I do it myself! So it ends up being around $42. Damn, that's a crap load of money for an oil change. My old dealer did it for $39.26. That included checking, and testing all kinds of stuff like belts, hoses, filters, adding brake fluid, checking battery, replacing marker bulb,....ect. It's sounds like your getting ripped off big time. I would have a word with that dealer, and ask them what the hell they think they are doing. Good Luck. iluvmycaddy 01-27-05, 12:08 PM My father changed my oil...about $6 for the oil filter and $2.59 for 5 quarts of oil.....The dealerships really rips people off with their services. Yeah, mines about $45.00, and thats alot too. I go to Penzoil. They're pretty good. These cars just hold alot of oil. Route66 01-28-05, 10:39 AM I would be glad to pay only 120$ for the oil change. I live in Berlin, Germany and really everything around a car is so expensive.
My Cadillac dealer is always charging a minimum of 150$ for an oil change incl. filter.
But hey – if we have to pay 5.45$ for a gallon at the gas station (and not to mention the cost for tires, tax, insurance …), who cares?! :banghead: Krashed989 01-28-05, 01:20 PM Holy crap $120, wait thats Canadian isn't it? thats a lot for an oil change, around $80 to $95 or somthing like that American... I usually pay around $15 to $20 for mine... but of course I do it myself lol. 91TexasSeville 01-28-05, 02:19 PM What did you get for your $120Cdn oil change?
You should have received the oil and filter of choice. You got to sit in the luxurious waiting room that costs the dealer a fortune to maintain. You got to talk to your friend(s) on your cell phone, or the courtesy phone, had the chance to purchase a new set of floor mats from the accessories department, or a Snickers bar from one of the well stocked vending machines. You got to do all of this (LOL) while someone else was changing your oil, filter, and giving your car a quick visual inspection for potential oil related problems.
I don't think you were overcharged. You drive a Cadillac, and you got Cadillac service.
Be happy you drive a Cadillac and not a BMW or Mercedes. That same $120Cdn would not cover the smile and welcome they offer you in the waiting room. STS-in-Nottingham 01-28-05, 02:36 PM The simple answer is to change the oil yourself, it's such an easy job,
also, you know exactly what grade of oil is going in there,
leave it to a dealer and they could be putting any old crap in it but you would'nt know!! Murphyg 01-28-05, 07:29 PM If you dont want to do the maintanence your self there is an easier way round getting ripped from a dealer.
Go to the Canadian Tire, or what not, and purchase the things you want to be used/installed.
Find a reputable garage/service station that you are comfortable with. Also make sure you are comfortable with the mechanic/technician.
Can take a while to find a place like that but it is possible.
Always go to that same place, always ensure its the same person that works on your car, and always bring your own parts.
If its a tire rod or something as such that needs replacing; purchase it from the dealer. But have it installed where you are comfortable.
You will be amazed at what kind of response you will recieve. Not just from the individuals at the desk, but also from the mechanics every time you show up.
A person that cares and respects for there vehicle so much that they will only have one place and individual work on it goes a long way.
And givin the guys a case of beer on the odd visit doesnt hurt either.

Wow... never seen a Caddy dealer like that around here!!! But its a Chev, GM, Olds & Caddillac dealer. I get to sit in a crappy room with cold draft from the garage door, pay 2$ for tasteless cofee, no milk of course..., and read cheap 3 years old woman magazine LOL Thats why i never wait for my car... drop it off in the morning, pick it up after work. Some of you might advise against this but i dont have time or money to take off to service my car. Any way if i only do an oil change i go to Mr. Lube, this time i had more to get done on the car.

I always do my own maintenance on the car, BUT only in the summer. The garage at my dads place is full of tool and a nice stove but its not big enough to service my car inside. When its -25 Celcius outside I do NOT want to crawl under my car... BTW I dont like Canadian Tire parts... i find they are often cheap and slightly overpriced for the quality i get. I always get my parts at Coté in Gatineau. Its a local place but they have huge stock and can usualy get parts they dont stock withing 4 hours, talk about service!!! At-Pac and Autoparts Extra do have decent price also. Watersurgeon 01-31-05, 01:12 PM What, no KY Jelly? I would go back in and demand some lub with that oil change! Murphyg 01-31-05, 05:44 PM Know what you mean about Canadian Tire.
Guess I should have been more specific. You can get basicly any brand oil and filters there, as well as AC Delco plugs. But anything else should be factory. Dont buy any of there re-built crap. Go to the dealer or anywhere else that can get them for you.
Sorry about that.
Like you said 70Can. is more along the lines for a synthetic change.
Id be a little ticked at 120 my self. Thats unless they rotated my tires, cleaned my ashtray and all my CDs, as well as checked the pressure in the spare etc.......
There's a dealer near me on the border of Oakville and Mississauga that has a freakin kitchen in the waiting room. Couldnt believe it when I saw it. Menu board with daily specials and everything. Cook it all right there for ya.
Home cooked bacon and eggs with real homefries and toast for breakfast.
Soups of the day etc.....
Good prices too. Probably only to make up for the gouge on the vehicle service though like said. LOL
But is impressive ! Murphyg 01-31-05, 09:43 PM Didnt want to bring it up till I came across something relevent again.

About the pros and cons of synthetic. Its all over the place hear.
Personally I cant pick a side so I go semi-syn.
But you have to admit that it is quite costly for something that you should change at regular computer determined intervals.
What the difference is other than preference and of course cost, is still up in the air. As is very evident in the numerious posts on the subject.
Do a search on oil and wholly.............!There everywhere!
Have been quite a few interesting discussions about it in the past.
In the "least" it "may" do nothing more than confuse. But there is more than enough info here for anyone to make an educated and informed "personal" desicion.
Synthetic will be more expensive no matter.....
But if thats what you have decided you want, then thats what you will pay...More.
But is it really necessary?
Now that ive brought it up, here's a question to ask them.
How much would the service have cost if they put in what they stock for GM vehicles?
Being a GM dealer and all right ?
Ive worked in purchasing. Ive had to deal with special orders and such. But never is there a charge for special order unless its had to be shipped over seas or specially manufactured for a custom.
Were talkin oil here.
From there regular supplier.
Sounds to me as though you payed there delivery fee for the last six months. oldgamer 02-01-05, 10:31 AM What did you get for your $120Cdn oil change?

Really I don't want to seat in a luxury room. I don't care if dealler-stealler pays a lot for this room. I don't need Snickers bar from the vending machines (actually these machines maintained by other people, not a dealler, dealler just got money if he allows to install it in his steallership). I can purchase floor mats from other stores too. I'm not gonna tell to the dealler how to manage his bussines.
I came to the dealler for oil change, not for the luxury room or sauna. And really, I don't beleive they do work right and use right oil. And anyway, everytime they try to make "good impression", check the fluids (couple seconds, I don't need them to do that), put some ait into the tires. Everytime I check air pressure after and it's too high (because it was just right before). I better go to the dirty, oily garage where people know what they do and do not try to cheat you and ripp you off. Now I do all that work myself and at least I know what filter and oil I got. I have to agree with Murphg, don't buy spare parts from Canadian tire, especially electrical parts. As far as oil, filters and spark plug go, they are the same as you will get anywhere else. I live in Brampton, Ontario, I took my 1999 STS into the local Caddie Stealership and got a lube, filter and oil change for $40 Canadian. I would'nt climb under the car for that. Shop around. LOL cadillacmike68 02-01-05, 12:27 PM Sounds like your dealer is a real cheapskate:annoyed:
My local dealer has an expresso / cappachine machine, sodas, doughnuts (AKA fat pills), and ice cream all "free":)
They also have a $90.00 / hr USD labour rate and sky high parts prices:bonkers: oldgamer 02-01-05, 12:30 PM :d :d :d 97 STS
geee, I got around that by building a 5 car shop with a hoist in one of the stalls.
now I can change the oil in all my toys... lots cheaper.. I think..... dp102288 11-03-06, 08:00 AM $120. Too damn much. You should ask to speak to a supervisor or talk to a regional person. I would fight that to hell.
My car takes 7.5 quarts. I can get everything for less than $15 at Walmart. Only times it goes above $20 is when I don't do it, or throw in a bottle of liquor with it. I'm getting my oil changed right now an a dealer. I have to pick the car up soon. Autozone is not the cheapest but 7 quarts was $50. The work and filter should be about $20. $31 USD for Castrol 10w30 with 25 point inspection at Wal-mart. No runs, no drips, no errors. Murphyg 11-03-06, 06:26 PM Wal-mart eh ?
Thats probably as close as you'll get to Canadian Tire.
Scary stuff kids lol creeker 11-03-06, 07:19 PM $120.00 for a thermostat sounds crazy too, where do you live,I live in british columbia,I'll make sure to stay away from your dealer, find yourself a small trustworthy garage, ask around. | |
