: Eliminating/raising the speed limiter - how to?

I was told that I'll need a GM Tech2 and a VIN# from a H or Z-rated FWD N* caddy. I can get a hold of a GM Tech2 but I have never used one before, is it in plain English or some kind of tech gibberish? Also what exactly do I need to do on the Tech2?

Now I know 112mph on the public road is breaking the law but 112mph on an oval racetrack means I'll be slower than a 99 Mercury Cougar or a 96 Honda Civic.

Most guys on here don't really know but will tell you that you can't change the air in Cadillac tires. The guy who knows and could change it won't answer questions but gives unsolicited advice from time to time and may have mentioned it years ago, try searching. Here's what I know: You'll also need acess to GM's internet downloading site. It's tech gibberish if you didn't know that already as in there's not a Hypertech style menu to start changing the PCM settings. You have to do a lot on the Tech2, more than I can tell you so you should start reading GM manuals on PCM reflashing.

In other news: Three cars you'll never see on an oval race track racing, a 99 Mercury Coagar, a 96 Honda Civic, or an 98 Deville. But interestingly, they are among the top 25 you'll see street racing the shoulders around traffic. LOL

Good luck man, your best bet is to find a experienced GM tech that is currently employeed as such to to it for you.

You'll be surprised how many 90s Honda Civic is still running around and how many of them are actually plenty fast... although I still think they sound horrible. I used to have a 2000 Mercury Cougar with the v6, it is painfully slow but hey it doesn't have a speed limiter so eventually it'll pass my Cadillac.

Do car performance shops get sued all the time because they make cars go a lot faster than originally intended? No. Not wanting to get sued is the reason why a lot of stuff don't get done or are so overly redundant that the fun is gone. There are plenty of sue-happy idiots in this country who doesn't want to be responsible for themselves, but I'm not one of them. The GM shop in my town said they can't raise my speed limiter due to (guess it) liability, plus they rip people off anyway and I don't want to give them any money.


So that's why I plan on doing it myself. Any advice would be appreciated on here or through PM.

I'm not suggesting that you walk into a dealership service dept an request anything other than a routine wallet flush service, rather you need to ask around until you find a GM electronics and or drivability tech who will do it on the side. There are so many underpaid over taxed and worked dealer techs in this world that I'm sure in your area there's at least one with a monthly child support payment and expensive habits like racing, hunting, or any of the bad ones that won't even blink when you wave a saw-buck under his nose. Also look into mobile computer techs who specialize in electronic diagnosis and computer reflashing for the smaller garages, you can google them, phone book, or call around the smaller mom & pop shops looking for a reference. They can do this also. You'll have to have an VIN with the same engine (275 OR 300HP) and the speed limiter you want to make it easy. If you want to just change your limiter you'll have to goto a specialist. If you search under tuning on this site you'll find a couple of service providers that claim to be able to do simple changes like this. They are mentioned as good by some and then discredited by others all the time.

Someone might want to go to Discussions; Engines and find the forum with the ECM/PCM tuning threads. You won't find anything on the FWD Northstar PCM from about 2000 - 2004, but you might find a link to someone to talk to. Just sayin'

............. and here's an observation: Attempting to raise the speed limiter on a questionably maintained 1998 base Deville is pure folly. Unless the entire car is in as-new condition you're playing with your (and other's) life. For starters, what is the speed rating and age of the tires presently on the car and when were the brakes last overhauled ?

So a Vin from 97~99 Deville Concours would be my best bet? That's pretty easy consider that eBay lists the VIN on their site.

So you automatically assume that I don't maintain my car? Why? Ceramic pads/new brake calipers were put in 55k miles ago, new both front rotors are less than 50k miles, new front struts/rear upper/lower knuckle bushings less than 20k miles ago, replacement anti-roll bar about 25k miles ago, new front tie rod ends and new summer tires/alignment just three weeks ago. It is all done at a trusted local repair shop, the only thing left is the rear shocks and I'm getting that done this month.


I'll bet you 50 bucks that my Deville is faster than your STS and the Supercab, but Maryland is a far drive:duck:

Most oval tracks require you to replace the brake fluid at least before every season. I have a few customers that bring their track cars in for a mechanical certification each spring. I alternate between ATE blue and amber to keep it quick with dual bleeder opposed piston calipers at each wheel.

I'll bet you $50 that Sub won't even meet you at his nearest track for less than $1,000. I know I wouldn't. $50 is what I'll spend in gas and snacks. LOL

I wouldn't race my Deville in any form. The suspension is too soft and basically made for comfort.

My Seville, on the other hand, is equipped with CVRSS and while both are on FE1, my Seville is way tighter than my Deville. With my Seville I would do tougher stuff which I would hesitate to do with my Deville.

And then Sub's STS is equipped with FE3 and F55.....

Once i get my rear CVRSS shocks installed (the'yre still in boxes under my bed) and have the money to buy the front CVRSS struts and have all of it installed i'll take my Eldo out for a spin on the 240 bypass out towards Hanford, it's 6 lanes, wide open and after 7pm noone is around
