i have a 6disk changer and now it wont let me play my cds at all and it has scratched up all of my cds and i dont know what the problem is anybody have any ideas that can help me out or do i need to change out the whole thing

I don't think anyone really services them. You'll probably have to get a new on.

Yes and before I sold my sts v8 2007 I had an issue with the cd/DVD player as well. The infamous "DVD-x is initializing." I wanted to have it fixed before selling it for my sts-v so i could sell a flawless car. Still have the receipt where the dealer quoted me $2800 to replace it. I said no thanks the next owner will have to do with an iPod.

But maybe something is stuck in there causing it to scratch? My understanding is that the player is sensitive to burnt CDs as opposed to ones you buy. Labels, stickers etc. bad part is whatever you do to attempt to fix it will have to be followed by testing it which may cause more scratched CDs. At one point you say it won't play CDs. Then you say it scratches them up. Can you describe in detail what happens when you put a cd in. Is there any type of error message? Does it give you problems ejecting? Does it make noises? Might not hurt to open it up and take a look inside. May be something obvious. Any more details on what exactly happens might be helpful to others who are trying to diagnose your problem.

when i put in the CD it takes it in and then it tries to load it up and then u just hear a noise that sounds like it is scratching up the cd and i am using burnt CDS

05-29-13, 12:19 AM
So it tries to load it, never succeeds but only scratches the hell out of it and continues scratching until you hit eject at which point it immediately obeys the command and ejects? If you don't hit eject it just keeps scratching without giving an error message? After the nightmare with my sts I don't even touch the CD player in my v. Don't want to chance it.

So any idea what i should do

05-29-13, 08:35 AM
Well assuming the detail I went into at first there was right, open it up and see if there is any debris in there that is obviously causing the problem. If so get it out and try again. If this doesn't work, or if there is nothing wrong, take it to the dealer, tell them to diagnose, and hopefully the answer isn't to replace the whole system which will cost you almost 3 G'S.

Or buy a good used one on eBay for $150. There was no mention of it being a nav unit. If so, change the cost to about $350.

Yes I am taking about a nav unit good point

05-29-13, 10:37 PM
Too bad. I've had our Nav's out and they don't look all that easy to disassemble & reassemble.

05-29-13, 10:49 PM
idintokic, is it a nav unit? If yes, my course of action is it. If not, see chazglenn3's comment. echas3 says the nav units don't look easy to mess with so if it is a nav unit, and you don't see anything obviously wrong that's causing the issue, you'll probably be out of luck.

The top slot is only for Nav DVD's. Is there any chance your trouble could be so simple?

Replacing a Nav will require a trip to the dealer to reset security. If you're on good terms, it's a five-minute included service. If you're 'that guy again' who knows.

I don't know if the base radio is also security keyed. A good question. Anyone know?

Boy, wouldn't that be a nice simple fix.

All Cadillac radios from 1998+ have theftlock vin encoding.

05-30-13, 10:33 PM
its a regular stero no navi unit

05-30-13, 11:47 PM
Well it won't cost as much to replace at least.

05-31-13, 08:37 AM
Ok I'm not knowledgeable on that unit at all sorry. But you should still be able to open it up and see if anything like debris is there that could be causing the problem. If not then I'd take it to the dealer.

2005 sts 6 disc cd changer reading "cd mech error". I disconnected battery cables for 30 min. Didn't reset. Read "cd power error" this was yesterday. Today, reading cd mech error again and won't eject cd's. any suggestions from anyone? Could it be the fuse? I haven't checked that yet

06-02-13, 11:01 AM
I don't see how it could be a fuse; it gets power. It's not hard to pull the trim & radio; just be careful not to crack it down low where it's thin. Maybe you can take it apart and look for something obvious. You can't hurt it, it's already broken.

You can likely get a replacement from an auto parts recycler for pretty cheap. It will take a trip to the dealer with proof of purchase to get the theft-lock cleared. If you were considering an upgrade to Nav, now might be the time; but it's imperfect and kinda spendy.

Good luck.

I'm assuming its not the nav one. First link is gen 1 cts users with this issue and possible solutions. 2nd link is detailed instructions on how to take it apart and get your CDs out.

And I see you did a search because you found the issue on the srx forums. Saw your post Haha. I'd try that thing where they pull the unit and disconnect and reconnect all the connections.

Guy, I see a few for good prices on eBay. Mine is non nav. Do u know if I can buy a nav and simply replace mine? Or would I have to change other things like antenna etc?

08-25-13, 10:34 AM
Are you putting labels on your home burnt CD's ?
Try it without the labels, but, after you LOOK inside
for a foriegn object.
Happy Motoring !

08-25-13, 10:39 AM
I'm thinking there's more to it than just plugging the nav into a non nav car. Not 100% sure what though.

08-25-13, 01:16 PM
There is a thread on here about adding a nav, about 30 pages worth.

I recently swaped out my non Nav stereo with a navigation unit. it was a easy plug and play but had to buy Gps antenna and Nav disc. I purchased a new unit so i did not have to take it to the dealership for any reprogramming.
