i am thinking about buying a 2001 motor with 44k to swap into my 97 catera if it gives me any problems.Anyone ever do this and have some pointers, are the the same as far as plugs and stuff just pull one out put the other in.I paid 1700 for the car and i love the way the catera looks i just see all the problems the 97-98 have.

2001 motor may not work. Since it uses upgraded electronics that uses electronic throttle control as part of the package. Your 97' doesnt have electronic throttle control as well as other updates that the 01 has.
Id go to a Cadillac dealer and see what recall work was done.. if the camshaft/waterpump tensioner system has been replaced via recall, it should be fine (if it even needs it), secondly the oil cooler should be replaced if it hasnt under recall. Those are the two major ones that will kill any catera.

so the camshaft/water pump tensioner and oil cooler are covered under the recalls if it hasnt been done already.thanks again jeff i have only been a member of this forum a few days and already everyone has been helping me so much

wait, the oil cooler isnt technically recalled but should show up as being repaired if by Cadillac which it should be ... sorry for the mis-info. There js a new version of the oil cooler in use now. And also, valve covers and valve cover gaskets can be a problem as well.

so i need to buy new valve covers and gaskets.

No, im just saying they can be ... any engine. Just so you know that was one of the problems but this one cant really be prevented unless you say replace them everytime.

is there any way to switch the 2001 motor from electronic throttle to cable .sorry for all the questions just figured they were interchangable because the junkyard said they were.

i called the dealer and gave the vin # and they said all recalls were completed not sure if they are lying my vin is w06vr52r3vr079110 1997 catera if someone else can check on it for me to make sure.

There shouldnt be a need to switch engines now... if the Cadillac dealer said all recall work was done. Go to the dealer directly and have them show you what they see.
