: Trunk Latch Malfunction

The trunk latch on my coupe has developed a problem where it doesn't lock open. The trunk will open but I can't close it unless I push the button or the remote to activate the lock again. I'm guessing that either the solenoid is weak or there could be some linkage that needs to be adjusted. Has anyone else had this problem? It doesn't do it all the time so if I take it in they probably won't be able to duplicate the malfunction and it will be a wasted trip. I might try to find the problem if it isn't too hard to get the liner off the inside of the trunk lid.

Thanks for taking an interest, Gregory. I'm always reluctant to take a car in with an intermittant problem because... well, you know what happens. If it keeps acting up I'll take you up on your offer, if I can find out how to send a PM.

Interesting you posted this. My 2012 Coupe is at the dealer right now for a problem with my trunk. Sometimes I would park the car for the night, then when I wake up the next morning, my trunk would be open. First time it happened I thought maybe I just forgot to close it (which is rare because I'm extremely OCD and I always triple check everything). Then one day while parked at work, I returned to my car and the trunk was open again. Finally, after waking up one morning for a third time and finding my trunk open, I decided to take it in. This time it wouldn't even stay closed and I had to drive to the dealer with the damn trunk slightly bouncing up and down. I'm currently driving a loaner ATS (which I hate by the way. Interior is too small. But I love the softness of the leather compared to my CTS Coupe and I love the dash layout and the materials used). As soon as my coupe is ready, I'll give you an update about the trunk situation.

I had the same problem with my 2012 coupe. It turned out to be a bad latch caused by water entering through the third brake like. There is a service bulletin on this. As soon as I took it in, they knew what it was. Per the bulletin, replaced the latch and sealed the third brake light. No problems since.

I'm glad to hear that there might be a TSB for this problem. That should improve the chances of getting it repaired on the first try. We went to several yards sales today & mine only malfunctioned once in about a dozen openings. I worked on cars for many years & it can be hard to diagnose an intermittent problem unless there is a known issue. I'm sorry to hear that Lac_Boy found the ATS too small as I was already concerned about that. My CTS is the perfect size for me & I've been wondering if an ATS coupe would work for my next car. I have bad knees & I need a lot of room to get in & out.

Hmmm I dont know if my issue is related to this or not. I've had the car for about 6 months now and twice the trunk failed to close so I had to remove the cover for the latch and re-adjust it.

Thanks for posting the solution to your problem & the TSB #. Was there any mention of water getting in your switch as
reported by C "T" ess ? The malfunction is a minor inconvience to me that I thought could wait until I got around to taking it in. If water is getting in I think I had better take it in soon.

I have had a similar issue with my 2008 sedan. Trunk would not latch for several days then suddenly start latching again. After several bouts of this I have found that it occurs when filling the trunk with something large. The emergency open latch on the inside of the trunk gets pushed back and then sticks. Now if it happens, I just wiggle the latch a bit and it fixes the problem.

Today, got to work and pressed the button on the remote to open the trunk - trunk did not open. The lights were blinking so that I knew the car had registered the command and also knew the remote was working since I could lock and unlock the doors. Pressing the button inside the driver's door did not do any good. Long story short, I could not get my laptop out of the trunk. I did not remember the location of the emergency release latch in the trunk. As I have the base model, my rear seats do not fold - only the pass through.

Therefore, I drove to the dealer and they figured out it's a bad latch. The latch is now on order and will be replaced when it comes in a few days. All in all, to whole thing's gonna cost me around $300 since my car is now out of the B2B waranty. Never had such issues with cars that cost much less - kinda of disappointing!

Any bulletin available related to that issue?

Hello like2drive,

If you were to provide me with your name, contact info, VIN, mileage, and dealership you are working with I can look further into the situation to make sure there are no recalls or service announcements that are open on your vehicle. I am glad to hear that the dealership was able to address the concern you were experiencing. I do apologize that it was an out of pocket expense though. Please feel free to reach out to me via private message if you would like to further discuss your concern.

Here we go again. Nothing should ever go wrong on a CTS because it costs so much. Things wear out on automobiles, refrigerators, washers even us.
I agree the $300 cost is a large hit.
