View Full Version : 99 Sts Seville I just bought a 99 seville STS and I noticed when I go over bumps or dips in the road i hear some noise. Usually as a ride the noise goes away. I was wondering if it the struts or something. I can push the car up and down and it makes no noise but when I'm driving and hit a dip there is this noise. CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE. ElDawgg 2G 01-17-05, 12:35 PM Hello...
I ran a search here on this forum and discovered that several owners have experienced this problem.
I even noticed it on my 2000 ETC.
One owner was finally able to quiet the noise by lubricating his sway bar bushings.
I haven't followed up on his success.
Hope this helps...
Good Luck! What kind of noise is it (clunk, squeak, rattle). The reason I ask is that different parts of the car, will make different sounds when going over bumps. ElDawgg 2G 01-17-05, 01:33 PM Hello...
My 2000 ETC sounded like a squeaky spring (in the front only)
...usually while going over a speed bump.
However, the car was totaled in an accident during Thanksgiving 2004.
I have replaced it with a 2000 STS...I haven't experienced this problem with the car (...yet!)
It is interesting that these 2 cars, although similar, perform quite differently.
I'm still undecided which I prefer...
I'll keep posting. A squeak when going over a speed bump is probably the Sway Bar bushings. If it's cold outside, they will get stiff, and squeak even more. The easiest thing to do would be to replace them. I don't think they are very expensive, and they are pretty easy to do, if you have access to some tools and a jack, or lift. A clunk is usually something like a strut mount, or some othre loose mechanical part. If the struts are bad, then this could be caused by the car bottoming out also. Good Luck. I notice I hear the noise when it is cold outside and when I take tight turns. It sounds more like a bump then a clank. If it is the strut what should I look for or what noise should I be looking for. Could be the Stabilizer Bar. El Dobro 01-19-05, 02:19 PM There have been noise problems with the strut bearings, especially when it gets cold. rontide 02-07-05, 03:58 PM FOUND THE ANSWER TO THE SQUEAK PROBLEM.
I have had the same problem and finally had the problem fixed. The dealer replaced the sway bar bushings which did not work. It is the round rubber insulators on top of your upper & lower springs which attach to your struts.
Also replace the spring seat. My mechanic is an independent shop but worked for Crest Cadillac in Birmingham, AL. He says there have been two technical releases for this problem. It's great to have a squeak free car. Had just about given up. Cost for work was $240.00.
Rontide @yahoo.com $240.00 seems like alot for something like that, but I guess I see it that way, since I had them replaced for free. I had new struts installed to the tune of a little over $1600 at my dealer. I get home, and go to check something with the suspension (don;t remember what) and I find that both of my rubber insulators on the spring retainers, are held together with duct tape. I was furious. I called them up a demanded to know why they had not replaced these $10 parts, after I just spent of $1600 on new struts. They immediately told me to bring it in, and that they would take car of it. The only charged me for the parts, which was $24. I'm glad I yelled at them, because the labor was $192. Luckily, they didn't charge me for that. The clunk is much less noticable, but it still happens every once and a while. I've sorta given up on fixing it right now, since i need money for other things. rontide 02-11-05, 11:37 AM Danbuc - The insulator repair was non dealer repair. Think my local dealer would be more or at least equal. My local mechanic also will drive my car and chcke things out and not make a diagnostic charge. No dealer does that around here.
RS Good point about the test driving. I know for a fact that my old dealer never did it, even when they said they would. I dropped it off one time, and watched the placed for a few hours until they called me on my cellphone. When I walked in to pick it up, I asked why they had not taken it out, and they had no answer. :helpless: most all good repair shops will charge a diagnostic fee, whatever the problem is. all these shops that say they will check it for free just use it as a draw to people in the door. yes some folks still fall for that. but face it, someone always pays for this, nobody can afford to work for free. you may pay by getting parts that you don't need, or getting short changed on a service, such as an alignment. case in point, how many shops still advertise $39.95 brake jobs. have you ever talked to anyone that ever got out for the advertised price? most of the estimates i see from these shops are always in the hundreds of dollars range. the majority of these cars don't need half the parts these shops want to sell them. sorry about the rant. $240.00 for parts and labor to replace the rubber strut insulators is very reasonable. the struts have to come off, remove the sprongs, install the isolators, reinstall the struts and then align the car. Yes, it is reasonable, but not when they weren't repaced when I spent $1600 on new struts. There is no excuse for putting them back together with duct tape on the new struts, just because they didn't feel like replacing them. That just bad work ethics, not wanting to take the extra effort to replace a worn part. That why I managed to get it replaced for just the cost of parts. It should have been done in the first place. | |
