Hi everyone,

I bought a 1968 Cadillac Eldorado hardtop coupe yesterday.

This car had been sitting for more than one year withpout being driven at all.
I ckecked all fluid levels and I drove it straight from Geneva to Paris (about 400 miles) with only two stops.
Therefore guess you could say that it does run well !

Nevertheless, although its run well at rather high speed on the highway
(60/70 mph) I have the impression that it lacks power at slow speed.

It also slows down a lot when the road climbs in spite of the pressure I am putting on the throttle pedal.

Upon my arrival in Paris, I had a quick look at the engine and I saw that
one spark plug wire was a bit loose - could that be the problem ?

Of course, I am going to have a compression test asap but the car only has 45.000 miles with only one original and I suppose it takes more than that to wear a 472 ...

To day, I am going to ckeck the spark plugs, carburettor cleanliness, air filter, etc.
Incidentally, could someone give me the references of the correct spark plugs for this (472 ?) engine.

Any suggestions about the other things that I should ckeck ?

Regards

Bernard

While your checking everything you might as wellmake sure your vacuum advance in the distributor is working. If it is old and not working this could cause the points plate in the dist. not to advance when throttling up and would result in loss of power. Find the vacuum hose coming from the dist. Trace it to the carb and remove it there. Place it in your mouth and begin sucking on it. You should feel it tighten up to the point where you can't draw anymore air. If this does not happen then the vac advance is bad. $8.00 part at most part stores.
