: Changing to LED's for the Parking, DRL's and Fogs Today

So waiting on the LED's to arrive this afternoon then plan on changing them. Seen some posts talking about how to change the top bulbs. But can't find anything about the easiest way to change the Fog Lights?? Any help would be great.
Thanks

Youll have direct access to fog bulbs from underneath...fairly simple to get too. Post some pics when youre done!!

you won't see them but lay on your back and you'll feel them, very easy.

Thanks, I was under there the other day to change out the tow hooks. Had to remove that plastic shelf thing on one side. Was just attached with think 4 small screws. So guessing I have to undo that on both sides to get to the fogs?

shore

nope, just lay on your back and reach up there. The area is open. Unplug the harness and twist the bulbs out.

----------

You'll have a harder time getting room to remove the upper bulbs...then even better is the DRL's without removing the headlight.

two bolts up top on the headlight and one that you have to go behind the splash guard in front of the tire.

You can change every bulb in the front without taking the headlight or the fogs out of the vehicle. I've changed every light in the front of my escalade.. never removed headlight (just remove top 2 bolts and pull headlight forward for parking and DRL) and fogs are very easy to change as well, just lay on the ground and you can see it. For changing HID headlights, just remove air filter for passenger side and remove second battery plate for driver side. With a step ladder or step stool, you can easily see how the bulbs are installed.

Got everything changed yesterday. Took all 3 bolts out for the headlights and looks like would break something to get them all the way out. I tried to take a pic with my phone last night but they are actually too bright for the camera. May try to use a digital camera tonight and see if its any better. I took 1 pic when I had one side already done to see the difference, but still too light outside to tell see the parking lights. Tried to upload the pic but looks like not working.

What exactly are switchback LEDs?

Bulbs that are two different colors. So they can be "white" to match your headlights etc but blink in amber so to look legal.

I did this almost 1.5 years ago so that's very possible on different part numbers. I still would of had to change the socket though because the factory socket would not power the white light off the switch back bulb. And just tapped into the fog light +12v with the extra wire for the new sockets. It was very easy. Just takes some time soldering everything and heat shrinking but in the end it looks factory and its done right.

I did this to my Escalade about 2 weeks ago. I did LED for front parking lights (top), 30W LEDs for the DRL, 6000K HIDs and 30W LEDs for the fogs and 30W reverse. Gonna do switchbacks on the turn signals with resistors but just waiting for my vendor to ship out my HP LEDs.

Mine me asking what bulb you used for the doors? All the 194's I tried were too fat to fit in the square hole they have.

I just changed mine again. This time its vled's 6000k Cadillac drl, retrofit sources morimoto 6000k headlights and some cheap no name brand fog his bulbs, previously I had 6000k bulbs from Flashtech which is local to me, and they had a blue Tint to them. It matched all my interior and exterior led's in blueness which my "6000k" LEDs we pretty blueish white. But after 2 years 1 headlight bulb went out and 1 fog light bulb went out. The new replacements look pure white. Only problem is the cheap eBay hid bulb didn't have a harness plug on them but it was easy enough to pop off the plug off the old one. And the d1s from retrofit source was a lot better in build quality from the Flashtech one. The morimoto bulb is a d1s bulb from the get go, the flash tech bulb is a d2c bulb that fits their d1s base which gives a loose fit. And the 6000k hid drl I had wouldn't really work in the housing without drilling out the factory cap. The new vled drl is white and fits on the spot well but the plug doesn't seem to snap into place like it does on the factory bulb. I'll post pics after I get the switch back bulbs in.

haha, the puddle light issue..here's what I found.

My truck just had the mirrors replaced with new ones. The old mirrors did not allow the 195 led to fit, All I did was dremel a little out and it went right in. The new mirrors let the bulb go right in.

My mirrors fit the bulbs with no issue. The only bulb in my car giving me trouble Is the ones in the front doors. I tried 3 different bulbs, all of which were too fat that they wouldn't allow the socket to attach to the housing.

For those that want a break down, the lights consists of parking lights from flash tech, drl's from vleds, headlights from retrofitsource fogs are from hidextra and blinkers are the newer ones from vleds

Here is a breakdown of mine:
Interior
Maps/Dome: 39MM/42MM 9 SMD x6
Doors: T10 5SMD
Visors: 30MM 3SMD

Exterior
Reverse: 30W T20 x2
License: T10 8SMD x2
Puddle: T10 5SMD x2
Parking Light: T10 5SMD x2
DRL: 30W 5202/H16 x2
Fog Light: 30W 9005/H10/9145

All the 30W bulbs are pure white, which to me seem like a 5000K; All other LED bulbs are Xenon White, which is more of a 6000K color. If you want PURE WHITE, get the High Power bulbs (3/5W, 30W).

Yep those 3 are the ones; the ones I used were direct plug & play. Just FYI, the fog light leds will not be as bright as the halogen version but should match a bit closer to your 4300K headlights. As for chinese version...some of them use real cree leds mfg'd in the USA but others use the chinese version epistars leds.

Great info on the swaps, I'm an admitted LED freak and will be starting with interior LEDS and 60w CREE LED reverse lamps on my Bro's 2010 Escalade before going to the front end. Seems the opinion is that 5000K matches stock HIDS the best which is a bit tougher with LEDS as most on the market are in the 6000-6500K range or don't specify at all. I was a big VLEDS fan for years but recently I have had a bunch of bulbs burn out on me on different cars and trucks although none of my old ones went. Not sure if quality is slipping, but prices keep going up. :bigroll: I'm turning to some eBay sellers for this project and will update on how things work out maybe some pics too. :yup:

Three 5202/H16-style bulbs that I'm considering, #1 is prob bright enough w/ the SMD 5630's other options 60w or 30w CREE XB-D's:

Two Parking Lamp 194/921-style Options 30w or 50w CREE XB-D's:

And for the 9145/H10 Fogs what you guys think about these 80w CREE lamps? 16 XB-D chips VS VLEDS fogs that ony have 10 XB chips and for less money $$$:

True, the second 5202 option is pricey, but look at the equipment and specs, option #1 uses 12 x 5630 SMD's which will be brighter than the 12 x 5050 SMD's in your link, option #2 blows both them away in brightness with 12 x 5w CREE XB-D chips, the VLED bulb option posted earlier only states 10 LED, which I'm guessing are XB-D chips, but still less output than the option #2 I posted. Lumen ratings are often inaccurately reported but regardless your option is rated at 300lm my option #2 is 1300lm. Like I said might be overkill but you got to consider quality and output of the chips, same goes for the H10 fog option I posted.

Yeah the 5630 would work ok for the DRL. But there is a huge difference in brightness, especially during daylight. The 80W are good for the fogs. i got the 50W and will be upgrading to the 80s soon.

Two 5202-style bulbs that I'm considering, #1 is prob bright enough w/ the SMD 5630's and also half the price:
1) http://www.ebay.com/itm/300840760954?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

2) http://www.ebay.com/itm/111240258397?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

And for the 9145/H10 Fogs what you guys think about these 80w CREE lamps? 16 XB-D chips VS VLEDS fogs that ony have 10 XB chips and for less money $$$:

@Throwback
Well if you can hold off, I did pull the trigger on the 2nd link and will post a noon, dusk shot when the come. Im also doin switchbacks (non VLED) and VLED fogs. I have both 6k and 5k so atleast I'll be able to match them pretty close

Thanx for schooling me a little, Im glad I didn't pull the trigger. Im kinda liking option 2...esp since VLED has a backorder. My biggest fear is them appearing too blue like this http://ijdmtoy.com/BLOG/wordpress/2012/04/20/2010-cadillac-escalade-combines-5201-led-bulbs-with-hid/ I prefer 5000k. I need to get on my PC and off the phone to get an good idea on color temps

Can't wait to see some pics, I think you'll be happy with the eBay CREE's, I got a set of 30w CREE's like the ones I linked for my Infiniti G37x as backup lamps and they are awesome! Perfect pure white color and they are like 2 little flashlights, way more light projection than SMD 5050's or 5630's.

*** Update: I added more option links to my Page 4 post - Trusted eBay seller "sanlongparts" 99.9% Positive Feedback with 11K+ Transactions. ***

I bought those to rewire the turn signals in the bumper to do the switchbacks, the factory sockets ground is fused inside the socket itself and wont allow it to light up properly so new (really old style thats on every GM vehicle) 3157 sockets with 3 wires coming out were needed for the turn signals.*

For the DRL all you need is the bulb you got, simple install and voilą

Here are the reasons for me getting the sockets

These are definitely pure white, just a hint of blue I say 5K max, they are not 6k for sure. The 3rd pic thats blurry is a great indication on how the look in real life. They daytime pic at the bottom was being washed by the sun a little

My mirrors fit the bulbs with no issue. The only bulb in my car giving me trouble Is the ones in the front doors. I tried 3 different bulbs, all of which were too fat that they wouldn't allow the socket to attach to the housing.

Just in case anybody runs into this ABOVE problem like I did today, LED's not fitting through the reflector housing, there is a simple fix. 1) Pop out the lens unit from either of the front doors and detach the harness from the back, 2) Seperate the Red/Clear front reflector lens from the white backing plate, this is NOT easy, the clips are pretty stiff but take your time, use a small flat head screwdriver and make it happen, 3) Plug the harness back into the white backing plate piece, 4) Insert the new LED into the socket/backing plate, 5) Re-clip the front RED/Clear reflector to the backing plate and pop it back in the door. Bam Done!

----------

By the way how are you all finding is the easiest way to access the Parking Lamps, DRL's or Headlamps? Took a quick look at my bro's 2010 Escalade and seems the washer fluid tank/shielding is in the way on drivers side and air intake box is in the way on the other side, kinda like his old 2008 Tahoe, PITA! :nono:

Do you NEED to get at the lower fender/headlamp bolt through the wheel-well to get enough room for access or can you just remove the top two bolts and squeeze your hand in?

I accessed my DRL from the top, driver side was tight but I still managed to get my hands ...edit hand, in there. The passenger side was extremely easy from top

The T10 5-SMD 5050's are the ones that cause issues in the reflector housing. When I first upgraded I just clearanced the housing a bit with blade. I recently switched them out to 5730 LEDs and those fit perfectly and damn are they bright!

Thank you very much for suggesting and posting the link to these bulbs 2muchspl. They are very bright and the color is PERFECT!!!

***ON A SIDE NOTE***. Does anyone know if the bulb holders that these 5202/H16 bulbs snap into before twisting them into the back of the headlamp housing are serviced/available? I damaged/broke the little tabs that are on the top and bottom of these and was hoping to be able to somehow purchase them...
