Not too many hard wire radar installs on the forum so thought I'd post my recent install up. I've always used the 9500ix windshield mount radar but got tired of it falling down from it's suction cups coming loose so decided to install a hardwire 8500ci Plus radar.

Install was pretty simply, maybe 2 hours total of my time. Radar head unit is located behind the front grille and is screwed down to the foam within the grille. It's wire follows the hood release cable and then goes into the interior through the firewall through the hood release cable grommet. The main wire harness is zip tied to the air duct under the steering column. Since the GPS antenna can get signals through glass and plastic, it's double sided tapped to the air duct above the glove box. Access there is by dropping the glove box door and reaching up, just placed this one by feel as high up to the dash top surface as possible.

I placed the display beside the steering column so it's visible while the gear shift is in park or drive. Display wire is barley visible with how it's installed. I could have drilled a small hole there and made it cleaner looking but I don't want to mark up the interior any for resale consideration and a little exposed wire is okay with me. Hope this post helps give others similar ideas or help doing the same.

That's a clean install. Thanks for the write up. I started with the Passpost Escort early nineties and it was bullet proof wiht the aluminum case and all and still have it just dont use it. I bought the 7500 a good while back and am still using it. I just got around to mounting it in the Escalade last weekend. I'd like to trade up but no more than I drive it I cant justify replacing the 7500.

with it being outside, wont that get dirty then not function properly? Or have you had a setup like that before... like the clean look, just wondering if outside in the front is the best place....

sdgc, its a external radar unit. It's designed to get wet and exposed to the elements.

kboxer, thank you for the upload. I'm trying to install a laser jammer and I'm trying to figure out which hole I can go through for the wires. Where is the hood release cable located? If you can point me towards that, I think I can handle it... I hope. Was it hard to remove the plastic kick plate where the ODB receiver is?

Very nice. I have that setup in my Vette. Also, Id recommend spending the extra $250 for the shifters. They plug right into the back of the radar unit at the grill (so no extra wires to run through the firewall) and have saved my butt numerous times!

you can also mount the radar to the mirror and hard wire it to the mirror's power supply. That's how I did my valentine 1
