Looks like an axle seal... Probably stopped leaking cuz the fluid level is down

Unscrew the six bolts holding the front axle to the front differential and let the axle hang down. Take a large hammer and a long punch (or flathead screwdriver) and tap the shaft out that the axle was bolted to. With the shaft removed you can remove the seal and replace it with a new one. The seal is pretty inexpensive at your local autoparts store. Don't be afraid to give the shaft a good whack, that is the correct way to remove it. Below is picture of the front diff with the shaft moved out so you can see the seal.
Edit : After looking at your picture again, I can see your leak is on the driver's side. Same procedure as stated above, the shaft is only shorter :-)

As i am in the process of pulling my differential out to get to the oil pan, just from my recollection, it seems that there would be enough room to pull the drivers side shaft out without having to remove it. The CV shafts can be unbolted and scooched out of the way

Where the seal was sitting there is a little bit of rust on the shaft. Should I buy a new shaft?

so long as it's smooth i wouldn't worry about it. If it's pitted and feels rough, then you may try smoothing it out with a dremel or some other method. What part of the country do you live in? Looks like you've had alot of salt exposure?
