: Update on parts I have/had

I sold all of my 93 to 99 cams. Then a forum member contacted me for help with a 2003 DTS. He needed and engine. I worked out a deal to get rid of one of my blocks. We almost had the deal done and he said he had a P0741 also. He was on the fence with the complete rebuilt engine price. I quoted out parts only on the trans. He couldn't do that. I had the think about what I was trying to do. I needed to get rid of my Northstar parts. I made the deal work out.

I am using a 02 block that had just 61k miles. I have a used crank for it currently, but I think I will but my brand new crank in it. I am putting in a custom torque converter and very custom built trans.

I installed a set of Norm's inserts. I can tell you this set is the best option on the market. I am extremely happy with Norm's kit. I have to guaranty this job and this was the only way I could do that. The stud thing in my opinion is NOT the way to go.
If this thing was to take a crap on him I would be in a world of hurt. The engine and trans need to outlast the car. You have to remember I am trying to get rid of this stuff and get my LS project back on track

I may end up throwing a tune at this. I went with a spring type clutch plate instead of the Viscous and he may not like the way it feels

Hiya, AJ. Nice to see you back.

You opened a can of worms: Have you broken into the 2000 - 2004 PCM ?

We have come a long way with what we can do with all of the GM PCM's. We have done 3 OE 96 to 99 PCM's in the last year. Two of these were in Fiero's and they wanted the tunes to work correctly. The AC had to be run through the PCM and we did not use a HVAC module. We had to make sure that they had 1st gear starts. We had to disable all of the DTC's that would be set when all of the other modules were missing.

After the death threat from Randy on that other forum we took a look at the Northstar stuff. We had paid our dues here and on other forum that were involved with Northstar's and we never got even 1 tune out of all of the money we spent. We decided to drop all of our advertising cost that were linked to the Northstar's

I decided to get rid of all of my Northstar parts

Hey AJ, is it possible to tweak the TC slippage limits with a Tech II so as to avoid getting the PITA P0741 code all the time? Been meaning to see if a dealer can and will do it.

Yeah I know. I keep thinking about that too. Part of the situation is that I'd like it to be an mini toggle on/off switch rather than a temp contact push button.

Get over it dude! You still owe a couple of our members tunes, including me, you made an agreement and never fulfilled it. I knew this whole time you were lying, though, I also knew we would not see anything from you. Just because you can make a Northstar work in a Fiero, and you have a couple crates of Northstar parts, that does not make you a tuner. I have also left you completely alone since we had our little debate, now, maybe you can extend the same courtesy. For anyone else wondering what is going on, here are some links where you can see everything, you will learn a lot if you read these links.

That works too :)

I don't what to post something and get an infraction. I hope this will be OK. Can you fill out the form on my website and I will send you your PCM back. My programming cable is out for an upgrade and should be back the middle of next week. Then I will load your OLD PCM and send it back. The PCM from way back when.

I am not sure if this link will work and I need to update my address

I got the engine together and found out I had the wrong set of rings. I will need to pull it all back down. New rod bolts again and another set of head gaskets

I put together a shopping list on a website to give the guy a quote.
I went back a few days later and wrote down all of the numbers. I wrote down the correct ring number for the year of the car. This companies pistons use a different ring.
When I was assembling the rings on the pistons I thought that the oil ring felt loose. Then it felt ok.
I was going to check the part number, but got side tracked.
side track cost me $500

New rod bolts? Thought you were supposed to change rod bearings when you took off rods due to bearing crush issues? But you change rod bolts if you disassemble?

Northstar rod bolts are comparatively high torque items - always replace them at overhaul.

From the GM service manual for Northstar procedures: "Powdered metal connecting rods have rod bolts which yield when torqued. If the rod bolts are loosened or removed the rod bolts must be replaced. Rod bolts that are not replaced will not torque to the correct clamp load and can lead to serious engine damage."

The FSM stated that you needed to replace the rod bearings originaly, but they updated that information to state only if worn.

I talked quickly with our resident northstar guru today and he said that if theY break or if he thinks they feel "weird" coming out he replaces them. (The main bolts that is)

Usually it s the studded one an one or more of the others.

But often he won't need any. It all depends.

I have broken a few main bolts. I used to keep a few new bolts in my area at the Caddy dealer for the other techs to use because we did not stock them. Spent almost 6 years as what I would say is a Northstar Tech. Still work on Caddy's just not every day -- Chevy/Caddy dealer fits me better
