View Full Version : Question on the cooling system(s)? . . .

Are the radiator and intercooler 100% separate systems, or are they connected and do they share the same coolant?
My dealer is chasing a ghost of a coolant smell in my car.
I am sure they checked the levels? I was getting that smell after I had my fluids changed and come to find out they put too much coolant in the tank on the drivers side and it was bubbling out.

My dealer did the same thing, but with the intercooler coolant.

I am going insane trying to figure out why the heck my car smells like anti freeze . .
No one has added any coolant to either system . .
The Dealer says the radiator system held pressure overnight . . . could not get a definitive answer on if they tested the inter cooler system . .

Is it just outside the car or also inside? You should be able to see one of the levels go down eventually if It's a leak.
When the dealer flushed mine, they left a clamp on the hose to the thermostat slightly loose. After the engine would cool back down it would leak a little. And I had coolant show up on the garage floor (and smell).

Most obvious smell is from the engine bay when parked in the garage . .
No signs of leaking on the floor . .
The intercooler fill point by the battery looks a little low to me . . but the dealer said it's fine . .
The dealer had the car sitting for over 24 hours on the radiator pressure test, and no loss of pressure . .
It is driving me nuts . . I hate the smell of coolant . . . :(

I hear you. It makes you think something is wrong, but you might just have to wait and see if it gets worse or at least shows its self to you.
The only other thing I would suggest is look around with a flashlight under the hood and from underneath. The leak might be so small that it evaporates before it makes it to the ground.
Mine had a pretty strong odor and I would only find coolant on the ground after it sat for a few days and it wasn't much. I found the leak location using a flashlight. It was just a small amount coming from the hose and only after cool down, not under full heat pressure.
But I wouldn't worry too much about it if you aren't seeing the level drop.

Oh, and my dealer also couldn't find the problem even though they caused it. But it was so small I can see why. It took time and patience.

I will have to keep an eye on it . . .
