: Dumb question - is a wagon a "5 door car?"

Just curious - it seems there is a great deal of interchangeability here: a hatchback is a 5-door car (meaning, the rear glass opens with the rear door), but is a wagon not also a "5 door" car... just visually longer than a hatchback?

This will keep me up at night - what say you?

Is a wagon a 5-door?

people tend to have their own definitions for this stuff. but estate = 5-door = wagon = touring

I tend to differentiate wagons and 5-doors by virtue of the shape of the car. Wagons are bigger and longer, where 5 doors tend to be shorter and smaller, with the hatch section being the end point for the shape of the car. 5-doors tend to look like normal cars while wagons tend to look like wagons. That's just how I choose to look at it, they're all technically 5 doors. It's just how I differentiate wagons (Magnum, CTS-V wagon, Jetta Sportwagen) from 5 doors, or hot hatchbacks (Golf, Impreza/WRX/STi, Mazda 3).

I think the car industry would define a 5-door as anything with a back hatch instead of a trunk.

"wagon", "hatchback" are just subsets.

A shooting brake was originally defined as a two door with a hatch.

Yes, that is a shooting brake. A five door is never a shooting brake. It is an estate.

----------

A wagon is a five door. A hatch used to be a two door with a rising rear door either vertical or largely horizontal [making it a 3 door]. With the massive success of the hot hatch segment in Europe, hatches have expanded to five doors, which I personally looked at and just saw small wagon, but whatever. I think the discussion begins with a distinction drawn between the old 3 door hatches and differentiating the newer 5 door hatches. Wagons had long been referred to as 5 door cars, but it wasn't a big deal. In the end all five doors are cars, wait for it ... five doors. Any other distinction between hatch and wagon can be argued out as a subset of the five door category.

In a wagon you can make porn. Try that in a V coupe.
