looking to add a rear view camera to my truck

will the stock head unit display/accept camera input ?

if not are there any known displays/head units that still allow steering function buttons to control ?

OR has anyone here installed a r/view say.. license plate mount or inserted one below gate handle and are very happy with it ?

thanks for any and all suggestions

There is add ons that allow you to use the stock head unit

As far as the camera location I don't like having mine mounted on the license plate and at night the back up lights make the night vision act up

I've seen people drill a hole in the bumper to the left of the license plate or use the spare tire key slot. You could put it in the tow hitch or they sell a rear view mirror with a tiny 3 inch screen in it

I would recommend NavTool but it says 05-06 not sure if the 04 navigation unit can support it

I put in a new kenwood system, so I'm no help there. I added a camera to the bumper, next to the hitch. You don't see it unless you're looking for it.

I don't know about the camera mount
But the radio install should be easy as the wires on the interface should be color coded to the ones on the radio
As far as getting the radio in the dash
Tilt the steering wheel as low as it will go
Then put the truck in first(hold the brake) and remove the dash bezel (I start at the right lower corner)
The factory radio is held in with three screws you will need a 7mm socket to remove them the rest is just unplug the harnesses

There is a adapter for the antenna since the factory connection is smaller then aftermarket radios antenna connection I ran into this issue when I installed a aftermarket radio in my grandmas Buick
I got it at Walmart (it was included with the harness but you can buy one separately)

Gmos interface should have instructions but the wires should be color coded the same as the radio

I ran mine under the trim panel below the hatch (much easier to route the wiring as it is between the weather stripping and the trim panel)

It's been fine, but I don't really have anything to compare it to, as I've never had a back up camera before. It isn't quite as nice as the one that came in my husband's 2012 Tundra. There isn't a grid like a stock camera has but I couldn't find any aftermarket cameras with that option. If you want the exact model number I can check my Crutchfield invoice. I don't think it was very expensive. Maybe a little over $100.

That is why I am asking for a few reviews as I am wanting something close to oem in terms of quality(I am a crutchfield customer also) as mine is needing replacing and I haven't had it long(though I didn't get it at crutchfield as I wanted to save some money but I guess you get what you pay for)

I bought a scratch and dent one. I figured it's exposed to the elements anyway, so it didn't need to start out looking perfect. It was $30 cheaper and looked brand new. It's definitely something to consider if that option is still available.

Getting a scratch and dent one is cheaper then a new one(heck I bought a used tv for a great price like that)

Do you have a DVD player in your escalade? I'm starting to think I might want to add one for my kids. I'm assuming the best way to do that is in the headrests? I should probably invest in an alarm system, too, if I add more stuff.

Yes but mine is factory it is a great thing to have for kids when on long trips(I use it for my younger cousins (they bring along a game console sometimes as the unit has a/v inputs) and rarely hear a peep from them
I have seen a few blu ray disc players that are portable which is backwards compatible with DVDs not sure if they have a head rest type yet

A aftermarket alarm is a great investment if you add any aftermarket equipment I suggest getting one that has a two way remote with paging feature so it lets you know if someone tries to tamper with the truck while you are away
