Scottie in Alabama 01-02-05, 11:49 PM Must be a GM defect. Mine has some play in it too! I thought maybe it needed a new pin put in it or something. It will be interesting to see what replies you get to this. Maybe I can fix mine myself. I can push up on mine and only get two positions on my tilt. Only poses a problem when I have to come to an abrupt stop. :disappoin BlueDeVil 01-06-05, 08:21 AM It is a common GM problem. It happens when you use the steering wheel to get in and out of the car. My old Oldsmobile needed to be tightened twice. There are four bolts buried in the steering column. It basically involves removing the steering wheel, taking out the lockplate, turn signal mechanism, ignition lock and sometimes the pins, to tighten the bolts. I found a walk-trough online and bought a steering wheel puller and lock plate remover. I acctually never tightened all 4 bolts because I didn't have a pin puller and didn't want to get into it any further. The second time I tightened it was after I had already pulled the steering wheel and everything to figure out how to fix my column after some thieves busted it. It was just an after thought but I could do it with my eyes closed now because I didn't have the walk-through and couldn't remember how to put it back together. After many a trial and error later I finally figured it out after putting on and pulling the wheel like 10 times. I was diffenately frustrated that day, that was the day after I was out until 4 dealing with my car being busted into and CD player and CDs being stolen. Bad day. But if it hadn't happened the oldmobile wouldn't have been totaled by the insurance and I wouldn't of lucked out and found my Lac. chuckles_100 01-06-05, 12:18 PM as blue devil said its a fairly common GM problem. I've fixed a half dozen of them for friends. I've now found that it will last if you use a little lock tite when you tighten them as it saves pulling those lil buggers down a second time! :banghead: If you have the tools and a good memory( small hands are a plus too as my big mitts are a tight squeeze) then its just a matter of pulling it apart and putting back correctly. :bonkers: Trickey 01-09-05, 11:26 AM Thanks guys for your imput.:worship:Since my car probably won't move again until after winter i think i'll give this a try.Tools i need are steering wheel puller what else? oh and where did you find walk through? Hope everyone had a happy new year not to much of this:drinker :cheers:and none of that:vomit: BlueDeVil 01-12-05, 03:03 PM I just did a google search and I think it was for a monte carlo, but its the same. I even found one with pictures and printed it off. A steering wheel puller, a lock ring remover ( not completely nessecary, since my uncle told me he did it without one once, but he had to have an extra set of hands, but I highly recomend it. their cheap.) some lock tite, and I think theres a tool to remove the tilt pins or I've heard it can be done with the righ size bolt and a slide hammer to get all four bolts. I didn't get all 4 even though I should have. | |
