View Full Version : Questions for 94-96 Lt-1 Fleetwood's carguy16 12-30-04, 10:22 AM Yesterday, I was talking to a lady in a parking lot about her georgious 95 Fleetwood Brougham, all white on the outside, white walls that need cleaning. I got her mechanic, asked her if her heat worked, got that info, her heat works great, a minute conversation.
I had parked infront of her car, because I saw it in the parking lot. Well, after we got done she got it and started it up, and boy did it sound different from mine, it sounded alot smoother. My car sounds like its running part diesel, but could this be due to the fact there are small corrosion holse forming in my mufflers??? :bighead: Or is this just a sign my engine isnt running as well as it should be.
Her car is owned by her since new, seems to be well taken care of, and is in the block of 80,000 miles. HotRodSaint 12-30-04, 12:20 PM Define 'smooth'?
To me, 'smooth' has less to do with noise, than with vibration.
How does you car idle? Can you tell it's on by the shaking motion? Because you shouldn't. And thats what I call smooth.
If it's shaking like a dragster waiting to launch at the Xmas tree, then I'd start with a tune-up, because you are probably mis-firing. My car was, so I changed the plugs and wires.
If 'smooth' it quiet, and your's is loud, then change the exhaust. carguy16 12-30-04, 12:45 PM My car is smooth and quiet, but her car was "smoother". MY car does not shake or vibrate, but the sound of the engine is different compared to hers, and im sure both of ours are all stock, but hers is a 95 and im a 94, i have 108k miles, hers has arond 80k miles.
Reminds me of a big V8 in a Chevy G3500 cargo van, not smooth.
It just sounds different, her engine sounded better then mine, smoother.

Chances are it's a lot of belt noise (real common on these cars). carguy16 12-30-04, 02:12 PM My car is quiet, it just sound's different. Its not the belt that causes the difference, it is the engine itself and the way it idles, its gotta be the engine or the exhaust.

Katshot 12-30-04, 08:19 PM You're getting me confused. First you say the engine is smooth, "...My car is quiet, it just sound's different...", now you say "...the way it idles, its gotta be the engine or the exhaust..."
You'd be surprised at what kind of weird noises can come from the belt or the belt-driven accessories. If you pull the belt and start the engine, you can pinpoint the noise to those items, or eliminate them all in one fell swoop.
If it's an exhaust noise, that "should" be pretty easy to determine. brougham 12-30-04, 09:04 PM I thought that you said you needed a tune up before. And you have holes in your muffler? If you get both of those things fixed yours will probably sound different too. ShadowLvr400 12-31-04, 09:32 AM Holes in the muffler make a HUGE difference. I got a smoother idle when I went to high flow mufflers, all because the stockers had soem holes in them. | |
