: HT 4100 oil pan capacity question

Hello, I'm new here, but have always loved the Cadillac Seville, from the 76-79. and especially the 80-85. I'm a collector and have accumulated quite a few of these models, and in spite of a slightly negative reputation of the HT 4100, I've had most of them operate quite nicely, even with a lot of mileage. My question for now is regarding the oil pan capacity. My 1985 shop manual says 4 qts. However during changing my oil in a 1984 Seville, it required 6 qts,(with filter). I also have a 1985 Eldorado, and when I changed that oil, it ,too required 6 qts. I was sure surprised. I'm guessing here, but don't know, that maybe both of these were factory replacement engines, and the factory decided to increase the oil capacity for more durability? I'm just wondering, if anyone knows, please comment. Thanks, Duane

I don't know about the Seville & Eldorado, but my 85 fleetwood brougham with the 4100 always takes 5 quarts with a new oil filter.

I's been a long time, but I swear my '83 & '85 4100's only took 4.5 or 5 qts. Almost positive I never put 6 in them.

Not sure about that specific vehicle, but my 4.x's all said 5.5 w/filter in the manual. However, I always put 6 in. It never appears overfull on the dipstick, and it's convenient when purchasing oil by the case.

Well, then disregard post #4 and we'll blame it on my memory.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like lots of evidence for the 4-5 quarts, does anybody know if replacement factory engines had the increased capacity?
