I just instaled a "tornado fuel saver" (yes i know, seems stupid) but i just whent on one of my usual highway runs and the average jumped up to 13.5 :hmm:
It seems that it helped alot. ill keep all you guys updated on how it turns out.

I do mainly city driving. My average was 11.5-12.5 miles per gallon in the summer with the A/C on, and about 13.5 in the winter. I did take a long highway trip with no A/C last month and made just over the advertised EPA highway MPG with 20.5.

Hi! I get 11-13 aroiund town (4.6 V-8, AWD) and 19-22 on highway with cruise set @68MPH!! I drive fast! (and love it!)

I get between 16.1 and 18.5 in combined city/highway driving in my V-8 AWD. I'm surprised by the low numbers posted by the others, and wonder how much of that is due to driving style. I will admit that my mpg seems to drop significantly if I drive over 75 mph.

I find it funny that the quoted MPG is not even close to what most people get.
I asked the guy at the dealership and he said that when they test for the mpg
they go to one of thos flat states and go it a straigt line just barly on the throttle.
Im dont know why the SRX has such fake quotes. Most other cars end up being off by like 1-2 mpg. Maby its just cause we all drive the car like we stole it.

I had been averaging about 15 mpg in combined (mostly urban and sub-urban) winter conditions on my '04 AWD V8. However, since a recent road trip (about 700 miles with 80% travelling at around 70 mph and the remaining at an "urban pace"), my average has boosted to 18.5 mpg. IOW, I did about 24 mpg on that trip. I've compared my mileage with actual gas purchases and adjust my reported mileage accordingly.

I can't complain about my mileage as it's pretty darned close to what GM claims for the SRX and my highway experience actually exceeds GM's claims.

Now my AWD 6.0 Escalade is doing better than my AWD V8 SRX used to do.

Hi!
Believe it or not.....EPA mileage tests are done by Computer so no human factor, weather , or else, can effect it! A probe (ouch!) is inserted in the talipipe(s) of all cars/trucks and they are warmed up to normal operating temps. A standard speed is selected for local and highway driving, on the dynometer, (don't know what they use) Then the Computer measures the gas/oxygen/co output and IT determines what the MPG sticker says!!!!!! Highly virtual, but eliminates ALL human factors. No allowance for drag co-efficient is made as far as I have read! (except indirectly, by class). Weight IS considered, as it says on the Sticker "....rated against similar vehicles in this weight class..." ,or something like that. Go see!

However, have found in my experience that it is dead median , and very close, for all vehicles I've bought in last 9 years, (6 , all American and new). We own 3 CARS/SUV at any time and I lease and trade in alot! So it helps with decisions a little.

Did you know about Crash Test methods/ratings?? It's similar. The 1-5 stars is assigned based on crash tests FOR VEHICLES OF SAME WEIGHT CLASS!!! It is accurate for a Honda Accord VS. a Totota camry ..... BUT not even CLOSE for a Camry vs. a Chevy Tahoe or Caddy SRX!!! More realistic, (they DO crash them!) but kinda virtual, for many non-similar comparisons. They don't make this fact known in bold print. Only in fine print! But again....it's a useful GUIDE!

I believe you; my mileage is very poor...

SRX V8 --> 13.2

LS 430 --> 19.7

Over the same loop (mainly highway/some traffic/city) on an average week...

Does the SRX NorthStar have knock sensors for the best (advanced) timing?? I have never noticed an octane “knock” so I am not sure the thing is running close to the limit of advance for best economy? Have noticed an occasional ‘knock” on the LS430, especially if forced to do regular…

I take mileage figures - EPA's and other drivers' - with a grain of salt. Most car owners I know take a few readings and declare these as their mileage. Others do not reconcile the differences in fuel consumption claimed by their onboard fuel meters and the pump.

Gearing and driving behaviour matters so much in real fuel economy. Let's face it, the SRX is geared to launch this 4400 lb beast quickly. There may be heavier vehicles with similar horsepower but all have somewhat different gearing - so we should expect the fuel consumption to be different. I have demonstrated (to my own satisfaction) that my own driving patterns can make the SRX's fuel economy liveable or can kill it altogether. I find that selecting "instant fuel economy" on the DIC helps me manage my right foot a little better - yet I still manage to sneak in a few "right foot moments" to make life a little more interesting...

Here's a link to the EPA site explaining their MPG testing methodology (http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/420f04053.htm#how).

And the appropriate excerpt:

How are Vehicles Tested?

Vehicles are driven over identical driving patterns by professional drivers in controlled laboratory conditions on a dynamometer, which is like a treadmill for cars. The conditions that occur during driving, such as wind drag and inertia are accounted for on the dynamometer. There are two types of tests that are conducted: city and highway tests.

The city test is approximately 11 miles long and simulates a stop and go trip with an average speed of about 20 miles per hour (mph). The trip lasts 31 minutes and has 23 stops. About 18 percent of the time is spent idling (as in waiting for traffic lights). A short freeway driving segment is included in the test. The engine is initially started after being parked overnight.

The highway simulates a 10 mile trip with an average speed of 48 mph. The vehicle is started "hot" and there is very little idling and no stops.

How Are the Label Estimates Calculated?

Fuel economy estimates are calculated from the emissions generated during the tests using a carbon balance equation. We know how much carbon is in the fuel, so by precisely measuring the carbon compounds expelled in the exhaust we can calculate the fuel economy.

After the vehicles have been tested, the results are adjusted downward to account for conditions that occur on the road that can affect fuel economy which don't occur during laboratory testing, such as cold temperature, aggressive driving, excessive use of power-hungry accessories, among others. The city is adjusted downward by 10 percent, and the highway by 22 percent.

Of course, your mileage may vary...

no matter what I do my mpg has been in the 13.19-13.32 range for the 4 fill-ups I've had since I got it. The DIC often says greater but so far has not translated to actual numbers. That start from stop must really burn up the gas. I'm tempted to try using the manual shift for a tank and see if there is any difference. Anybody try this yet? My driving is about 1/2 highway 1/2 city. Don't want to see the numbers from all city driving.

After a month or so of ownership We only have 700 miles on our new/left over V8 AWD but we are getting about 16.3 MPG in a combination of city highway driving. I get into the throttle some but I am not to hard on the accelerator so far. Will be getting the Volant intake shortly so we will see what effect that has..... :coolgleam

One of the things that is hurting our mileage is
that 5th gear is a .75 ratio.
vs. the 4 speeds that have a .70.
In '06 Cadillac will starting putting the 6 sp autos in, and they will be a .68 or so, 6th gear.
That 6th gear will drop your rpms about 7% which will give us another 1-2 mpg on the highway.

My V6 RWD is rated at 23 mpg hwy and it gets about 20mpg at 80 mph.
I have done a trip where I never went above 69mph and got 23.3mpg.

It is interesting that the V8s mileage is that bad because you guys have the 3.23 gear and I have the 3.73 gear.

YA, well granted we do have 2 more gas sucking cylinders in there.
But still.
Just as an update on the Tornado fuel saver, It seems to REALLY WORK!
On the highways especially. My avg jumped from 12.4-12.7 up to 13.2-13.5

First few months I was getting 12-14 in town and abot 18 on-the -road until I hit about 10,000 mi. Now I get 13-16 in town and my last 700 mile road trip I was getting 20 ... Maybe it's like us old folks...It gets better the longer we go!

Only 1500 miles so far, driving around Houston (50% highway) and I'm getting just under 17. The CID computes about 18.5. I must admit I babied it a lot for the 1st 1000. I bet driving habits have a lot to do with the large varitions. Any thoughts.

Has anybody tried to burn a tank while trying to get the absolute best milage? I don't think people bought the 320hp models to drive like granpa to church. One can't enjoy the performance and then whine at the pump!

The milage is all over the place. I drove up to Napa a mix of freeway and city and got 20 plus. On the way it dropped to an average of 18. At the end of a tank the best I have seen is 18.5 with a 70/30% freeway/city. I have to watch how I drive to get the best MPG. It seems the crusie control is a necessary part in the process of obtaining resonable MPGs.

City 13 - 15, highway 20 - 23 (depending on wind and speed limits). Record mileage at every fuel stop (compare DIC to actual miles and fuel amounts). Using 89 octane, monitor tire pressures frequently -- have covered 4700 miles so far. What a ride!!!
