I've been on here before but it's been a few months. So, I got a showroom condition 1987 Brougham back in July with 69,000 original miles, Cotillion white with white leather and red accents. Aside from a throttle position sensor and windshield wiper pump repair and a flat it's been running great. The issue is the antenna. The power antenna was no longer working when I bought the car.

Recently, I tried to push the antenna down, I didn't like how it was waving around on the freeway...looked a little loose. As I pushed, there was a *SNAP* and the top half came off in my hand.

So, now I feel pretty dumb about breaking it (loose as it was though, I have to wonder if it was about to snap off anyway, maybe the previous owner drove it through a carwash stuck up or something). The radio doesnt pick up anything but the closest stations and the rest of the antenna is visible down that hole.

Wondering what I can do? It looks like the bottom part is pretty hard to get at! Any ideas on how much it would cost to replace (with a conventional, non power antenna) and who besides dealers can do such things? Or, is there some piece of metal I can splice the top back onto the bottom with, then take it off if I ever need to go through a carwash.

Thanks for any information.

Call a dealer and find out how much a new one is. You can probably just put a normal antenna on it but why would you want to do that? Powe antennas look so much better :o Or just goto some junk yards to see if you can find a good one.

I don't know if you can get the mast by itself or not. However, I think you can get the whole assembly from the dealer for about $130 or so.

Your OEM antenna is no longer available. It's been replaced by a "generic" one that "works" that's the best you can say for it). IMO, I'd replace it with something like this: http://www.mtgparts.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MTGI&Product_Code=WS-54&Category_Code=&Search=radio+antenna&Search_Type=OR&Offset=17
Imagine NEVER having to replace another antenna. ;)

Maybe run it over the headliner and then down the trim by the door and finally into the dash. A little sheet work to fill in the old antenna hole.

If you get a replacement or junkyard power antenna, it probably means removing the wheel-well to get at it. Best of luck with that.

I thought about this kind of thing...would that make for a lot of "cord spaghetti" though, you know, little wires and stuff running around the car, or are they discreet and easy to hide. I don't want it to look like a communications center inside the otherwise flawless nice interior.

The ones I used to install were non-amplified units and were VERY easy to install and hide. In the limo business, we often had power antennas snapped of in the city and it was a REAL pain to replace them so often and it was expensive too. We did it purely for dollars and cents reason. Nowadays, the OEM antennas are no longer available. The unit sold by the dealer is just a "generic" unit and not really much better than the Pep Boys variety, although much more expensive. If you look around, you should be able to find a number of alternative models to the one I supplied the link to. Probably even cheaper. I usually mounted ours at the base of the rear window along the package shelf. It blended into the rear defroster grid.

I've got a problem related to this post, my power antenna doesnt work either. Sometimes after driving for a while, I see a couple of wires coming out from below my car directly underneath the antenna area; a black and white. By the way, my radio only gets the one local station. More recently, it looks like a vacuum hose or other type of hose has come loose. Are these two hanging objects related to the antenna? Is it vacuum driven up and down?

You may not have to replace the entire power unit. The mast antenna may still be available, as it is used by numerous vehicles. I replaced the one on my '86 Olds 98 in 2001. I doubt the motor mechanism is damaged, so I would check for the mast first.

You only get one station because of the antenna. No it doesn't have anything to do with vacuum. See if you can get to the power antenna inside the fender. Maybe it's not plugged in and that's why those wires are hanging out. Or maybe it just doesn't work anymore.

I ordered a replacement power antenna for my 78 SDV from USA Parts Supply (http://www.usapartssupply.com/) (I haven't had time to install it yet).

The USA Parts Supply (http://www.usapartssupply.com/) catalog that I have covers 71-85 Cadillacs, but they may have the antenna for your 87. Their phone number is 703-335-1935.

try the Junk yard find an 87 remove the pasenger tire the chrome trim and a few of the bolts that hold the wheel well on but not all of them and a couple of small bolts at the top close to the hood hinge unhook the wires and one bolt inside the finder then pull it out the bottom most yards charge around 30 to 35 for one. PS I could get you one from my local junk yard if you would like

As for the two wires hanging down they are the power wires that go to the antenna motor check to see if they are hooked up should be able to find them behind the wheel well also if your radio is getting bad reception its probly the connection on the back of the radio where the antenna wire plugs in. if they are pluged in check the fuse on the fuse panel

I've known a few who converted from the power unit to a fixed whip antenna mast. I think you should be able to find a universal motorized antenna. Parts America has two different units for $50-$60.
