The Lexus SC430, according to Jeremy Clarkson and James May. They went around the world driving Soviet junkers, French turds, and American lumps, but it was Lexus who they finally decided were responsible for the worst car... IN THE WORLD.

Cementing this awfulness is a Lexus ad for the SC430:

Wow. I've always really liked this car. Have thought about buying one.

Maybe it is because as a kid back in the forties I had a toy car that look very much like the SC 430 .... and hated it! Or because to me it is an expensive luxo turd that just happens to be so ugly it only appeals to men and women with more money aesthetic taste, not mention brains.

Unfortunately for me there are an abundance of these monstrosities in my neighborhood, and just as unfortunately they are apparently very reliable because I see them all the time blighting otherwise pleasant scenery.

One good thing about the SC 430 is that they really do quickly sort out who you might like to meet and perhaps have lunch. They also answer the question, "who would buy those atrocious pseudo Victorian, kitsch Mac Mansions that sprang like mushrooms in the first half of the first decade of the 21st century.

"Top Gear's" pick of the SC 430 for this honor goes a long way redeeming their otherwise questionable taste!

I'll agree. The SC430 is a poor successor to the awesome SC300/400 and is unremarkable when compared to the SL Mercedes, 6 Series BMW and Jaguar XK....it's primary competitors. It's a convertible without any sporty pretense and honestly, it's design always reminded me of a pumpkin.

I wanna see more of Jeremy putting that Mark IV through the slalom. :)

^^^ Yeah, I loved seeing the right front wheel completely off the ground as that Mark IV attempted a left hand turn at speed. Yup, Jello on a plate! But then you weren't supposed to drive those things with any pretense to vigorousness!

I am a convertible driver, have been for almost all of the years I have been driving. I have also owned quite a few odd and unpopular cars when I was delivering pizza. It takes a lot to make a convertible that I don't like. I could count the ones I wouldn't want on one hand. That design joined Mercury Capri and and Geo Metro on the list.

That model made no stylistic sense. I've always hated it. Good for Top Gear!

SC430 - for rich people who don't know any better.

If car manufacturers took one day to meet in a boardroom to design a car, were all fed laxitaves and didn't quite make it to the bathroom in time...the SC4XX was born.

I bought my dads old GS years ago... great car. He replaced it with a SC430 that he now wants to sell. I drove it yesterday and what a gutless POS. To me it has always been one of the ugliest cars but after driving it's terrible!

Really?? I thought it being halfway quick with that big v8 might be about its only redeeming feature.

I'll say its about the ugliest car ever, and with price factored in it might be ONE of the worst cars ever, but its definetenly not #1

All the speed in the world is meaningless if it's numb and lacking in feedback. A sports car is supposed to talk with you and offer a sense of control. The SC430 does none of that.

As a luxury car, the ride is jittery and the styling is horrid. Nice sound system though.

The TG special did make it clear that price was a factor in their determination -- delivering on enjoyment per dollar. Watch the part about the Ferrari F50.

Considering this, the SC430 is a very easy choice as the worst car ever.

In an automotive world of bland repetition and gadget laden boring boxes the SC 430 has some competition when it comes to a glaringly ugly status symbol for the well healed but taste devoid crowd. But even at this late date I can't see that the SC430 has any real challengers for "Worst Car in the World!"

I've been in a couple of those, honestly I had to google a picture to see one to make sure. That car has about as much personality as a white refrigerator, I mean not much to like an not much to hate. It's an appliance.

One of my friends back in the early 80's pulled up in a Sport Omega! White with orange stripe. LOL! What a piece of crap. I hope they crushed them all! Jesda dont even try. It was built off the chevy citation.. OMG. How about the Cimmarron! ROLMFAO.

I can't see how this beat out a 1984 Escort with an automatic, chevette diesel, Citation X11, Trabant... There is an endless list of cars worse than this.

This is just Clarkson being Clarkson.

I was thinking of "nice" cars that people paid a heap of $$$$ for that turned out to be turds:

v12 Jags, 4100 v8 powered Cadillacs, w220 S-class, w203 C-class, Toyota Cressida and MK III Supra(curse those under-tightened head bolts, and factory service manuals with the same wrong torque spec as they came from the factory with), Ferrari Mondail, any 60's/70's/80's diesel Mercedes. I will concede that the diesel Benzes were built like tanks and ran forever, but there is nothing luxurious about 15 second+ 0-60 times, the smell, the noise, the vibration, they made these very expensive sedans feel like a pedestrian $6000 diesel Golf or Chevette.

Because they were cheap.

I'm sorry, but the only problem about the X-11 and Citation variants were rust. Compared to the crap of the early 80s, GM's foray into affordable, roomy front drivers were decent.

My first car was a Citation and my father also had an X-11. The X-11 had more gauges than either of my Vs, a short shifter, was a manual and was faster than the floatin' large barges with V8s. And it had decent handling.

It had a bunch of drawbacks as well but there was more than enough virtue there, especially in the time they came out. There was a lot of crap in the early 80s.

I thought I saw most of that episode, I guess I missed the expensive part. In that case my 84 Biarrtiz convertible w/pimp package was light years worse than the Lexus. How about the lumbering barge of a 1994 XJS?

I'm pretty sure the 79-81 240D MBZ did 0-60 in 29 seconds, 15 seconds is kind. We had one at the dealership in 1980, everyone took turns driving it to experience the laughable performance.
