So I have played with Plastidip on several other applications and this stuff is absolutely AMAZING. Recently they introduced a new Plastidip Pearlizer so of course I had to give it a try and I must say, I AM IN LOVE!!!! Barely played around with it a little bit this evening and I must say for a universal generic pearl spray it matched the stock WDT pretty well. The following is base coat normal matte white Plastidip, 3 full coats Plastidip Pearlizer and Normal Rustoleum Automotive Clear Coat (not even wetsanded yet, will do so tomorrow once fully cured). Here are some pics...I did the full Plastdip job on the hood trim molding, the emblems are merely 1 coat of white with the Pearlizer sprayed while it was still wet, so you can see it slightly lighter and thin on the edges....overall I am IMPRESSED, now I can save big $$$ paint matching out all my trim!!!!

Wow, that's pretty cool, and it really does look like it matches up well.

My only concern with Plastidip has always been the consequences of going through a car wash, as there are peeps who mention that the combination of high pressure water the cloth brushes have been known to peel it off ... but I guess if that happens it's easy enough to respray it.

Very nice.

I had the wheels on my BMW Plastidipped for a year with NO issues pressure washing at all. I would never use the scrub brush on them but I carried a microfiber sponge to wipe them down after spraying and they always cleaned right up. You do have to take a little extra care with it but with regards to rock chips and nicks it is way stronger and more durable than paint

But you washed that beauty yourself right?

I'm too lazy to do that, plus it's freezing here half the year ... I was talking more about drive through car washes.

baggedlvintegra
11-21-12, 10:28 PM
o yeah, always wash it myself....I do see how being up north in the snow would interfere with Plastidipping things although I see many up north people dip whole vehicles... I too am very meticulous (not quite as much as you *that will always be a a bit of an inside joke lol* but pretty close) and would never drive any car I own through an automatic car wash, paint swirl galore, no way I could live with that on the WDT

BTW...it's November and the day before Thanksgiving, it was 79 degrees here today, God Bless Texas!!!!

Actually compared to the black tahoe hybrid I used to have the WDT denali i just sold showed no swirl marks from the cloth car wash I take her through once a week. However I do have my trucks detailed with a five step paint correction process, clay bar, the works, twice a year in the spring and fall.

Anyhoot, I didn't mean to change the subject, I'm just trying to figure out if this a plausible strategy for me.

That's awesome, might be the wash you visited but I swear down here one wash will have your paint so swirl'd it would make me cry. X2 on the paint correction / clay bar, it does WONDERS! I imagine it must be necessary up north with the harsh environment for paint....back somewhat on subject, to be honest it almost seems it may be too much maintenance for your situation up north with harsh weather and automatic car washes. I think my situation is much more managable and will make do for the time being. Once I have the color 100% nailed down I'm going to do my fender vents, door molding and lift gate applique like the 2012 Premiums, and should only cost about $40 :)

Nice. Wish I could do the same, but you can't buy the pearlizer here in Canada. Unfortunatelly it's not available.

11-21-12, 11:14 PM
Fonzie @ dipyourcar.com won't ship to Canada? I thought I had read they won't ship gallons due to certain regulations but I thought they would ship the cans? I see people on eBay selling it as well, no luck shipping up there?....Nobody locally sells it here either, all special order from online

Hazardous good cant go on plane. I contacted Partrick at dip your car.ca and he said its not available in Canada.

baggedlvintegra
11-21-12, 11:28 PM
bummer man...that's weird too because I see on the dipyourcar forums that there is a mod/DYC sponsor titled DipYourCarCanada, who offers dipping services and does whole vehicles, etc...wonder how they get the dip?

EDIT: Found this https://www.dipyourcar.com/pages.php?pageid=21

Yeah Partrick is in charge of the Canada side of dipyourcar. There are a few paints available here in Canada. But not the Pearlized and the glossy one. Just the flat paint.

So your comment earlier was you cant ship hazardous via air, but does anybody do ground where I could order some and then have it sent ground to you? Or do the same rules apply?

BlownEscalade
11-22-12, 07:50 PM
I don't know about ground. How much does the pearlizer cost? Maybe I wouldn't mind trying it.

So I got a chance to tackle the side fender vents, what a PITA to get these off without breaking or scratching anything!!!! I first did them all painted like the newer Premium style vents but ended up peeling back the plastidip on the main chrome slat and actually really like it as it keeps the lines with the body and upper roof rack and side step chrome lines. I'll post some better pics and full side shots tomorrow sometime...

Quick q ...

Did you also colormatch the black plastic trim between the hood and the chrome or did you leave that alone?

I ask cause on some pics it looks like its there and others like its not ... and I can't tell if it's shadowing from the angle of the pic or not.

Thanks. :)

baggedlvintegra
11-27-12, 08:34 PM
for my current hood molding I left it black, and to be honest that is because I wasn't sure how well the Dip would match so I left that black barrier between the two pieces so you couldn't as easily differentiate the two colors if they didn't match. Now if I was to do it over again I would do that black piece as well for a cleaner look. Actually the real 2012 premium hood moldings dont have that black piece period, its just straight paint matched trim piece

soulsea
11-27-12, 08:43 PM
Is the black gasket type piece part of the chrome molding or does it stay on the hood when you remove the molding?

The reason I ask is because I'm having mine actually painted, which I assume will cover the black well enough so as not to show any discoloration through the paint, and I'm wondering if both come off the hood at the same time?

Thanks.

baggedlvintegra
11-27-12, 08:45 PM
yes when you remove the chrome trim piece the black will come off with it. The black is held to the chrome with several of the mounting clips and IT SHOULD BE painted in 2 pieces. The chrome should be painted and the black piece should be painted seperately to be done RIGHT. If you paint them together you risk paint drying and eventually cracking and peeling at the seems

soulsea
11-27-12, 08:48 PM
That's good advice ... I'll make sure my paint guy does it as you indicate.

Once again, thanks.

I actually do paint work as well. I just really don't like doing pearls because it is so hard to accurately match so I'd rather pay somebody to be liable for the match than me waste a bunch of supplies and time trying. Can't wait to see all your little projects amount to a large modded pic thread!

No the door handles I found on eBay. They were premium model take offs that somebody replaced with chrome ones....thanks, hopefully our Dip will be here soon so I can finish mine and you can get started on yours

Haha I was wondering how long till the DYC crowd made it over here. I've been planning to dip my EXT for a while, just been busy to get to it. This however does give me a problem. I was just going to go flat black but this might be worth the trouble, maybe even two tone it with black somehow...

Finally found a deal on a platinum/premium hood trim piece (was Silver but only $50 on eBay) so I dipped it today as well as the grille emblem. I've always preferred the color matched emblems versus the standard black emblem. Turned out great, probably my best "dip" yet.

Cheap paint and clear will not stand up like the EOM paints. It might look good for a year in the elements. I hope the best for you but you may end up with a mess on your hands and regretting it, and wished you'd have had it done professionally.

To tell you the truth guys, I have the exact paint(s) from Plastidip (matte white and pearlizer) and its not dead on with the Diamond White.....

BlownEscalade
09-02-13, 11:35 PM
You won't match it dead on, but its good enough for small trim pieces. If it looks like crap after a year all you got to do is peel it off and re spray it. No big deal. Not too many body shops can actually match the tri coat dead on. Haven't seen it yet. Only way to get it to match is blend the paint.

For a black gloss application would you just spray the black and then clear coat. Peal back after both dry? How is the plastidip holding up on your mid door trim thus far?

has anyone cleared over the parts they plastidipped? Did it still just peel all the way off with the clear coat on top?

I'm plastidipping my bike and obviously doing 6-7 coats on the front fascia, fender fairings and gas tank as they will get the most contact (especially over 100+mph), but I wondered if I cleared over it if the matte would still peel off...
