If you do a search, I posted previously how I did HG in the car. I only removed the bolts from the timing cover, there is enough room to get in there to release the tensioners without removing the balancer.
how hard of a job is replacing the front gasket on the northstar I'm needing to change mine?

You might want to start your own thread on the matter, but the first piece of advice I will give you is if you are going to go through the trouble of doing one side properly, you should just do both sides.

There is tons of info on this forum reguarding h/g failure and replacement. You should take some time and do some reading. Obviously, considering the amount of work involved, you want to make very sure that it is the head gasket that is failed. And if it is, you need to replace both. The block test is the accepted standard for confirming that the h/g is failed, but as I recently experienced myself, it is not always 100% accurate. I know I'll hear some feedback on that statement!
