: Another Plastidip project - Black on Black on Black

So I finally go around to blacking out my emblems and chrome bits on the car with Plastidip. They honestly really bugged the crap out of me for a while. Chrome is overrated. I won't do a long writeup on how I did it or anything (because there are plenty of videos on Youtube) but I will say that I like Plastidip now for a couple of reasons:
1. It's cheap
2. You can peel it off if you mess up
3. Overspray doesn't stick to interior panels really (yeah good thing this wasn't paint)
4. It looks great

I will also say that I won't try this again unless I have another whole day to kill. I thought I would be done with this at lunch time, but masking off stuff when you are doing the entire car takes frickin forever. Also, the window trim on a cadillac is a PAIN...the Plastidip didn't have a clean break and I had to "paint" it back on with a paint brush. Super annoying but it turned out decent at 12 inches.

Masking masking masking!

I'll get some more outside pics when I pull into work tomorrow even though my car is super dirty right now. The grill looks way better as do the doors. Just need to paint the calipers and put the decals on like I had on my Lexus and I will be done cosmetically!

A few shots from outside the office today. Yes I know the car is super dirty, it's been raining and there is still residue from the tape. I will get it fully cleaned up eventually...ha.

Looks great. Did you consider doing the lower gray surround under the rear bumper? I think it would add to the overall effect.

If I only knew about this stuff sooner! Removing the grilles and lower lip and rear fascia was a pita!

Thanks! No I didn't, but now that you mention it that would probably look pretty awesome. I might even paint over those red reflectors. Probably going to give it some time though, I am all masked and painted out after Saturday...haha

Yeah I was skeptical but it's awesome stuff.

Good call on the lower valence, that would look great. Doing the grey front lip makes me nervous because I ALWAYS scrape that thing on curbs. I would have to redo it every other week :P

Took it through the pay and spray today and snapped a few more pics. Now that it's clean I realized how absurdly bad I oversprayed this thing and how lucky I am that it is just rubber and easily comes off!! The car is black so you can't really see it, but when I get it detailed it will be really noticeable beforehand under the lights.

Sooooo, would the heat from the exhaust possibly melt the plastidip or cause it to peel from around the lower rear bumper? that would be my only concern...

Won't peel. I've got mine on my pipes. It's awesome stuff

Yeah you basically have to mask off the entire car that you arent spraying cause that rubber floats EVERYWHERE!
im still finding little specs i have to rub off each time i clean my car.

How many cans did you end up buying?

I bought 3 cans but only ended up using 1.5 of them. That was with 4 coats for all of the trim on the car and the grille.

Looks cool! Maybe you can do the fog light trim if you ever get in a masking mood, since that looks to be the only chrome left.
Just a thought.

Damn that looks GREAT! I've got a black STS and have been thinking bout doing this. And yours is bout as close to what mine would look like as you can get without it being an actual STS. Lol. I've got chrome wheels with a gold Cadillac crest in the center too. Maybe even paint those. Hmm. Got me thinking here!

Now, I'm guessing I could also paint the wheels without removing them from the tire right?

Also did you have to worry about anything "running" like with paint on a vertical surface such as that? And final question. How much does a spray can run and can I get it at any auto parts store?

shmiddy

it would be way easier to take the wheels off. seems like a big pain in the ass to mask everything behind.

Take the wheels off. Expect to use a can a wheel(6 bucks each).

Another suggestion would be to finish it with a coat of clear. It still peels off the same and doesn't give the flat black look. IMO, the flat and gloss combo doesn't look right.

Can this rubber spray 'magic in a can' be had at an auto parts store, or is it a special/web order product?

I'm liking this thread, and the effect of this rubber spray on other auto applications, more and more!

I'm guessing your in your early 20's as this fad is growing with the youth. I don't understand it. Chrome is not overrated and it isn't like its being over used on Cadillac. Its the universal color for emblems because it stands out without clashing on any color. You should be proud to announce your cars make and model. Blacking them out or making them the same color as the car basically hides the name. Not to mention it looks terrible when every aspect of the car is the same color. You next step may as well be black taillight covers. Good god man you drive a Cadillac not some crappy Honda. No offense but when i look for used cars to fix up and turn, i avoid anything that looks like yours. It screams some young punk ruined and rodded on this car.

Looks nice. I've wanted to do this for a while but was a bit suspect. Did you also do your wheels?

Yes it's a caddy (I have the same exact car), big deal. I love the blacked out look. It makes the car look like a prowler! I for one am glad that he posted this, I will doing this on the next good weekend.

To the OP, so this will not come off in the car wash? Great job dude! :bighead:

The thing to remember is everyone has an opinion, that's what we fight for!! :usflag:

Gotta agree with Shadez... I think the amount of chrome on our Cadillac is just right. Of course, to each his own, but when you put it up here you gotta take the lumps with the likes. Enjoy the ladies...

looks amazing.. I may have to use your idea as Ive been dying to get rid of the chrome on my '08 CTS... Hopefully I can get it to come out just as good as yours... Does it rub off when you wash the car?
