: 2003 Escalade EXT factory ride height issue

I just purchased an extremely clean 2003 Escalade EXT with 78k miles. It was owned by an older gentleman and kept in flawless condition. I was pretty pleased with my purchase.

The only thing that bugged me about the truck is how low it was in front. It looked even lower than any ext that I have seen. There was barely any space between the front tire and fender. It has so much of a rake that I swear I could feel it just sitting in the truck. The rear seemed at the perfect height and the leveling works fine.

When I got the truck the ride height measured from the fender(above tire) to the ground was 33" front and 36" rear. The truck is all stock with stock size tires and stock wheels. I adjusted the torsion bars to bring the front up a bit. It took about 7 turns to get 1.75" in the front. It still has a rake, but looks much better. What bothers me now is how harsh the ride is. If I drive over those speed bump turtles the whole dash rattles now. It drove so much better before but looked ridiculous. Any ideas? Looking for the best of both worlds here.

Thanks!

Marcus

Here is what it looked like when I got it.... Kinda hard to tell how low it was from these photos.

Here is after I brought it up a bit....

One more thing I noticed when looking under the front end(before any adjustments) was the inner CV joints were actually lower than the outers. In other words the axles angled up to the hubs. I had never seen that in any vehicle.

It sounds like it may have drop spindles installed on it.

Crap I didn't even think about that! I'll go look. Would be strange that only the front was lowered.

I second that as it shows in the pics.

If it turns out that it has drop spindles and you want some stock ones, I have the originals off my 06. I also happen to be driving to Vegas this week for work.

The spindles look to be original. I did forget to note it does have aftermarket sway bars front and rear.

I appreciate the offer. Does the photo I took look like a stock one?

Can torsion bars get weak on these things?

Check the OEM ride height specs for that model...it may be that way by design. If so look for a front lift kit for an EXT. I think I have seen a kit somewhere online that corrects the condition you are describing. Check this: http://www.mpcustoms.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=tpflypage.tpl&category_id=13445&product_id=39103&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53

I think there is a 4 Wheel Parts Store in Vegas...if so they can do this for you. Great service from those guys and very knowledgeable.

Man...that EXT shure would look sweet with a set of Cadillac 22's on it!!.

Congrats on the purchase...looks nice...probably drives nicely with the heavier bars.

Thanks! I've read about replacing the torsion bar keys and it sounds like there is no difference between doing that and just cranking the adjusters up. The new keys just allow for more adjustment. What is getting me here is that the ride got worse when the front was raised a couple inches. Looking at stock trucks on google images it does look like most sit much higher than mine, perhaps even higher than where mine sits after adjusting.

I purchased the complete factory service manual in pdf form and I can't find ride height specs anywhere in it. Anyone have the factory specs?

In your picture that is definitely a stock spindle. I have 2 inch drop spindles on mine for reference.

I taken a closet look at the pics and i agree

torsion bars don't get weak they just break without warning then that side drops it happened to my uncle(don't ask long story) plus I have a 79 Chrysler cordoba that has torsion bars and they are (as far as I know) oem.

Looking at the adjusters on the torsion bars the right side is only adjusted up a few threads while the left side is probably up an inch of threads(while still sitting 1/2" lower than the right side). From the looks of it the right side adjustment was backed out all the way before I started cranking it up the other day.

Just to see if the ride would soften, I backed off the adjusters 2 turns both sides. We'll see what happens on the way to work tomorrow.

Where you able to find what the issue was with your escalade's height?
