: iPad Questions: Am I the Only One?

CAPT Mike

I see the OnStar App and it asks me for my account number to set up my ID and Password. What account number? I did not receive an OnStar card or booklet or anything with the XTS? Does it come in the mail or do I simply need to press the OnStar button in the vehicle?
Second question is with the Cadillac Apps that were loaded on the iPad. It showed that there were updates so I went to install and it showd a different Apple ID than the one I made for iTunes. It was CadiApps@gmail.com. It asked for the Password. No one told me of this gMail account and/or the password. And being not Technoabsolutelyliterate, I cannot eradicate this ID no matter how many times I start the process to change it all; because it always reverts to the original gmail email account for which I have no idea where it came from. So, am I the only one with this conundrum? Thanks in advance (TIA) for any advice/help.

Hey Capt Mike,

Those are both common issues that your salesperson should have gone over with you. Assuming you've pressed the blue button to complete your OnStar activation, you should have received an email from them with your account information. If not, you can retrieve it by pressing the blue button now and speaking to an advisor. Next visit OnStar.com to log into your account, and make sure that the OnStar mobile app is set to "allowed" in your account settings. From there, you should be good to go!

As far as the iPad, it comes down to how Apple handles apps. An Apple ID is required to load apps, so Cadillac uses their in-house ID to pre-load the apps onto the device, but this causes the apps and device to be linked to that account. What you'll need to do is plug into a PC or Mac and use iTunes to restore the iPad "as a new device" (this will erase the apps and Cadillac's account info). Now you can set the device up with the name and Apple ID you like, plus re-download the free apps using your own Apple ID.

The names of the free apps are:

-OnStar Remote Link
-MyCadillac
-CUE Trainer

If you don't have iTunes, download it here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

This is the fastest and easiest way to get your iPad up and running with the proper ID. I've passed along feedback to the factory on finding a better way to pre-load the apps to avoid these steps, but due to the way Apple handles app installations it's unlikely there's a better way to do it.

Hope that helps.

Iam glad Capt Mike asked. I had no idea what this stuff is all about. LOL I have my IPAD registered. I can now start my car, Lock it, unlock etc from my IPAD. ( whoopdie doo) However when I get to the screen that shows Tank Level, Fuel Level etc, it says at the top: Never updated frm XTS. So now what??How do I update? (I'm like the Capt. This stuff is a little too much at times!!) Now I know why the salesperson didn't explain any of this.

There's an icon in the upper right corner of the app that refreshes the data from your vehicle. Pressing this will gather the latest fuel, tire and oil data as long as the car has been running within the last 24 hours.

My salesman was a real nice guy; cordial, etc etc. Willing to take my money. But not very knowledgeable about all the techno stuff. Some of us may be older, but not senile (I might be getting close). Cadillac needs to train their people more to be able to train us or give up the techno stuff. Thanks for Tony, this forum, and the nice people you talk to when you call OnStar or ??

Speaking of the iPad, here is a really stupid question: Can the XTS be operated without the iPad?

I realize that a lot (most?) people love the Apple technology, but I am not one of them. I do not want to have to learn to operate an iPad in order to use my car. Is there something important that I would be giving up by not using the iPad with the car?

Cadjiek
10-30-12, 03:59 PM
Not a stupid question. The car works fine without IPAD knowledge. I didn't even know what an IPAD was until I got this car. To me it seems Cadillac must have joined forces with Apple to get some of us old geezers to become more tech savy. Anything I just learned today from this thread can be handled by using using your keyless remote, calling onstar or just looking at the car DIC. Just my thought.

I still use a basic cell phone too. Works fine CUE. None of those connectivity problems other are having with those super phones.

You are one of thousands, however, I have not been given the password either.

As it is a Cadillac iTunes account and nonspecific to the exact vehicle there must be a single password available to us. I have a call into the dealer but noone I have talked to even has a clue how an iPad works. Much less what their Caddie specific iTunes password is.

The Adobe Reader is also due one of its very frequent updates, but alas, that also has been loaded by Cadillac and can not be updated.

You would think Cadillac employs at least one young engineer that had some input into this idea of putting the info on an iPad provided with the new XTS. However the old geezers at Cadillac simply didn't listen to that one youngster.

Hi Bill!

You will not be able to get the password for Cadillac's iTunes account. They do in fact have a large contingent of younger, tech savvy folks working on the CUE program, but the problem you're encountering is a result of how Apple handles their app system, not something that Cadillac dropped the ball on.

In order to get your iPad properly updating the apps, you'll need to plug into a PC or Mac running iTunes and use that program to restore the iPad "as a new device". This will remove Cadillac's account and allow you to enter your own, then redownload the free apps. From this point forward the apps will be tied to the account that downloaded them (yours) and can be easily updated.

Hope this helps. :)

If you really would like to frustrate yourself, check Tony's method to get your own Apple account and password. Basically, you erase everything that is on your iPad now and then download all the apps including the Cadillac apps that were already downloaded using your new Apple ID and your new password. Seems easy enough, but wait...I am 66 years old, I have been retired for 3 years, I have changed my aggressive ways, and this job appears to be something that I don't want to tackle. So I'll live with the inability to download new editions for those cadillac Apps. Maybe, one day, the Cadillac people will give us the "secret word and handshake.":D:D BTW, I checked with my dealer/salesman and the info they gave me clearly notes that they have no idea how to do anything with the iPad. Cadillac Tony is truly the exception although his methodology is too cumbersome for my computer intellect:banghead::banghead:

It can seem daunting at first Mike, but hang in there! The method I described above is the most complete way to permanently remove any traces of the account Cadillac used to pre-load your apps, thanks to how Apple's system works.

This instructional page from Apple has photos, which may help. It's actually easier than it seems, and worth struggling through once so you can enjoy all the updates to your Cadillac apps. Once you've signed in to the iPad with your account, all apps and downloads will be tied to your email address (not Cadillac's) and function perfectly. Try reading this link and giving it another go.

I took the easy way. I simply deleted (so far) the Adobe Reader app, the MyCadillac app and the Cue Trainer app that had been downloaded on Caddie's iTunes account.

I then only had to reload the deleted apps from my own itunes account. Although that should be trivial, I am still trying to solve 2 problems....first is where to get the pdf file with the XTS owners manual that was in the preinstalled Adobe Readers app. I will look around for it and may yet find it.

The other is that iTunes has never heard of a MyCadillac app. Edit: In the iTunes store on my computer I did find a myCadillac iPhone app but the app store on the iPad can't find it at all.

I am now reinstalling the OnStar RemoteLink app after deleting Cadillac's download and resourcing it from my iTunes account.

After the 4 deletes and the 4 installs I should again be in control of this iPad.

Thanks for the help, Tony.

OK, I can report 90% success and I know how to complete the next 10%.

You can certainly use Tony's way and that simply requires connecting the computer and opening iTunes on the computer and following directions.

However I wanted to try it without leaving the iPad or using the computer.

I deleted the Caddiapps@gmail loaded apps. there are 4; myCadillac, Onstar Remote Link, Cue Training, and Adobe Reader with the XTS manual pdf in it.

I than went to the Apps icon on the iPad and searched for the replacements. As I found each one (they are free) I clicked on "install app." It than asked me for my iTunes account. That I have, so I entered my acct email and my iTunes password. The replacement apps downloaded and installed. The Cue Trainer needs no other actions. The Onstar Remote Link simply requires you to log in using your Onstar ID and your Onstar password and than you hit the partial circle in the upper left handcorner and the cloud updates the app with your cars info. The Adobe Reader is now yours not Cadillac's. So you need to go to Safari and google search for the 2013 Cadillac XTS Owner Manual. It will be the first answer after the 3 or 4 adds at the top of the page. Download it. When asked, say you want to open it with Adobe Reader. Once opened in Adobe Reader it will be saved and listed in the AR Documents section along with the Getting Started (adobe's manual) pdf.

My 10% miss is the myCadillac app. That is not available from the Apps icon on the iPad. It is available from the computers iTunes app. Open the iTunes app (not the iTunes web page) and than open the iTunes store. Search for myCadillac and an app for the iPhone will show. It can be downloaded on your computer. Than attach the iPad power cord with the wall plug removed to your laptop or desktop usb port. Now the iPad will show in the iTunes program. You will now need to synch the iPad with the iTunes program on the computer. You need to do that periodically anyhow as this is how you restore the iPad anytime it needs a hard reset (Tony's method). Now when the iPad is synched everything on it is saved to the computer and the myCadillac app you only could download on the computer is loaded onto the iPad.

Now if you ever need to use Tony's method you will have a backup synch available on the computer to use to restore your iPad.

Enjoy your new updated apps.

By the way, the greatest advantage of a pdf manual is that you can find anything you want without the index or T of Contents.....simply enter a keyword in the search bar and it will take you to every mention of that word in the manual. Hit the forward and back arrows at the bottom of the document to scroll through the document to find the next mention of the keyword. It is very cool and a huge time saver.

As I said earlier, Tony is truly a major help on this problem. But I continued to think about this and felt that there should be a universal solution, a simple one: Getting the password and in so doing gain the ability to change it for your needs. My theory is: if candiapps@gmail.com is a valid email account in the apple hierarchy, all of us affected by the CUE system and using the iPod should flood that email account with requests for the password. Maybe Apple, in all their techno wisdom, will determine a way to globally fix our problem. I like less cumbersome solutions and I personally resort to "roundabout" solutions only in the last resort. Ami I "KISSING" it to simply?

I agree with you CAPT Mike, gaining control of the iPad should be much easier. Maybe Cadillac could provide directions with each iPad for transferring the account from Cadillac to one's own iTunes account. I know many people who would not think to search for a forum such as this one where instructions have been posted. What will those people do?

CAPT Mike
11-04-12, 07:22 PM
Cadillac could do it, but they don't take control of training their sales personnel in the nuances of the CUE and iPad, why would they provide any direction? They after all gave up the ghost to Apple to download the apps; so I would suggest to go after Apple, the source of the problem. And to that end, I ask everyone who reads this forum and who has the iPad conundrum and refuses to delete and download to gain the advantage, to flood cadiapps@gmail.com with emails requesting their giving up their contrived password.

rayle
11-04-12, 09:27 PM
You're right, CAPT Mike, "Cadillac could do it." The problem with going after Apple is that buyers of Cadillacs have contracted with Cadillac, not with Apple. Whatever Cadillac and Apple have going . . . who knows. We, as buyers (or prospective buyers) of the Cadillac product, need to be assured that we can use the product we are purchasing.

I understand the frustration of everyone not accustomed to dealing with Apple products, but the asking for the password to Cadillac's account is barking up the wrong tree.

Apple requires a valid Apple ID to download apps, so the only way Cadillac can include the apps on the iPad is to use an in-house ID to load them. Apple also requires a payment method be attached to Apple IDs, which means if someone gave out the password to Cadillac's Apple ID, people could buy paid apps and charge them Cadillac's account. I don't think they want to be paying for everyone's copy of Angry Birds. :)

I've contacted several people at Cadillac and offered my advice on how to include instructions detailing the process of removing Cadillac's ID from the device. The only other alternative would be not including them at all, which would cause a lot of folks to miss out on trying the CUE app or OnStar remote link because they forget to download them.

For those who don't want to hassle with the changeover process yourself, you can visit an Apple store any time and have one of their customer service people perform the restore right there for you. At the end of the day, Cadillac is doing a really cool thing giving everyone an iPad with their new car, and they're pre-loading the apps in the only way Apple's system allows them to. If you're new to the iPad and having difficulty with the ID, simply visit an Apple store for free support and you'll be good to go.

Thank you, Cadillac Tony, for that added information and for continuing to help us consumers with this issue. Do you know if there is an option to purchase an XTS, waive the iPad equipment, and take iPad value ($500?) off the vehicle cost? If so, that would get me back to my previous question about whether I would be giving up anything critical to operating the vehicle. :hmm:

Edit: I hope you all know that when I posted that I agreed that "Cadillac could do it" I was referring to providing instructions, not providing the password.

Cadillac Tony
11-05-12, 11:39 AM
You're welcome. :)

There is no way to refuse the iPad at time of delivery. The program guidelines are such that in cases where a customer is adamant about not wanting the iPad, we're instructed to point them toward a local school, library or charity they can donate it to. Cadillac is presenting the iPad as a part of the purchase, not a "gift with purchase" that can be declined. There is nothing critical to operating the vehicle you would miss out on. Apps like the OnStar remote link are optional features, and all the information in the CUE trainer and .pdf owners manual can be found in your printed instructions.

I think it's a great piece of technology, and definitely a nice way to introduce the capacitive touch screen in CUE to folks not accustomed to using one. Hopefully once you get past the initial setup issues, you'll come to enjoy it also.

You should get the numbers from your dealer or, if you are like me, you will be able to call OnStar for the info. The only thing missing on your downloads will be the downloaded manual on the Adobe app. In order to update anything on the Cadillac iPad, you have to erase and start fresh anyway - see earlier forum threads. I haven't figured out how to download the manual. It doesn't really matter. Well, Cadillac tell me the Canadian customers will not receive an iPad. We just seem to have to pay more for less and have to wait 5 months (or longer - ordered an XTS Platinum Aug 31 now overdue with a now advised "tentative" production date of the week of Jan 7) to get it, even though the car is assembled in Canada. The following is a "cut & paste" from the e-mail I received when asking what version of iPad comes with the XTS Platinum.

General Motors of Canada Limited is not at this time promoting an IPad 3 with the purchase of a new XTS Platinum vehicle.

Nothing about reason. I guess given some US customers complain about using an iPad, they think Canadian are not smart enough to even try. LOL. And here I thought I had a nice x-mas gift for my wife, having already a 64 GB iPad3 for myself. Well we are Canadians and that's why we pay more for a car (even if produced in Canada (less than 100km from where I live and we have to wait months to get one - ordered mine on Aug 30th and now have a "tentative" production date of Jan 7/13) or anything else for that matter, even though the $ is basically at par for over a year.
