How much work ist it, to change the hydraulic lifters on the 472 engine?
Any specialtool nesseccary?
How someone done that before?
I think the ticking noise will be gone after changing the lifters
Thanks for help
Patrick
Lifters are not difficult to change on 472/500. No special tools are required. However, more often than not, valve "ticking" is often the result of worn rockers and supports. These wear usually when the oil is not changed frequently enough. Surprisingly, they seem to never wear if the oil is changed, even with high miles. Look under the valve covers, worn rockers are often accompanied with sludge.
If replacing the lifters, you may as well replace the push rods. Many people may tell you that you should replace the cam if replacing the lifters. I agree with this most of the time. The only exception (in my opinion) is the 472/500. These cams (factory stock) are durable and will last seemingly forever.
You should also check your oil pressure, sometimes reduced oil pressure will cause "lifter noise". It is standard procedure to check this first.
How many miles are on this engine? If you get a chance, post some pics. 1973 deville is on of my favorites.
Usually they just lift right out of the bores. If the engine is higer mileage, varnish buildup on the bottom can make it a bit of a challenge to get it out. Most of the time this isn't a problem, but if one is really stubborn, there is a little attachment for a small slide hammer to "encourage" them out.
